Best Batter Today

Juan Soto stayed atop the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings with a two for five in a 5-3, eleven inning Nationals win. Vinnie Pasquantino of the Royals posted a game score of 67 to move into second place. He went one for two with two walks and a home run in a 2-1 win over the Blue Jays. The other run came from a home run by Bobby Witt, Jr., who ranks seventh.

Yandy Diaz of the Rays ranks third as he went two for three with a walk in a 6-3 Red Sox win.

Matt Olson of the Braves dropped to fourth place as he drew two walks in a 6-5 win over the Tigers. His teammate, Nacho Alvarez Jr, posted the highest game score of the day, an 80, He went three for four with two home runs out of the ninth slot, his shot in the eighth starting the comeback that dropped the Tigers lead in the AL Central to one game.

Aaron Judge of the Yankees moved back into the top five with a two for four, including his 49th home run of the season in a 6-1 win over the Orioles. It was a pretty historic night for homers. Judge’s teammate, Giancarlo Stanton also homered, the 450th of his career. He is the active leader in home run, 50 ahead of Mike Trout of the Angels, who homered in a 3-0 win over the Rockies. Cal Raleigh of the Mariners, who ranks sixth, his his 57th home run of the season, setting the new single season record for the Mariners. Shohei Ohtani of the Dodgers hit home run 53 of his season, tying Kyle Schwarber of the Phillies for the NL lead. Judge’s home run also put him ahead of Bryce Harper of the Phillies in career home runs, Harper with four more seasons under his belt than Judge.

Tying Fame

A good friend of mine pointed out to me today that Mike Trout‘s 399th home run Thursday night tied Hall of Famer Al Kaline and Hall of the Very Good Andres Galarraga for 59th place. Like Trout, Kaline posted some of his best seasons early in his career. Unlike Trout, Kaline kept putting up very good seasons through age 36. Three of Trout’s last five season were under two rWAR. His peak was very early, seasonal age 20 to 27. He only generated 15 of his 87 WAR in that time.

Trout’s next Hall of Famer is Duke Snider at 407 homers.

Best Batter Today

Jackson Chourio joined the top five of the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings. He posted a two for four with two doubles in a 3-2 win over the Marlins to move into fifth place. Chourio hit in twenty games in a row, the longest current streak in the majors.

First placed remained with Corey Seager of the Rangers, who went one for four with a walk in an 8-1 win over the Braves. In the same game, Matt Olson of the Braves recorded a walk in four trips to the plate for fourth place.

Jose Ramirez of the Guardians stayed in second place with a one for four in a 4-1 Royals win. Cal Raleigh of the Mariners stands in third place after hitting his 41st home run of the season in a 4-1 Angels win. Mike Trout of the Angels drove in his 1000th run in the game.

The best game score of the day came Sunday night as Ronny Mauricio of the Mets produced an 83. He went four for four with two doubles and a home run in a 5-3 win over the Giants. The seasonal age 24 player improved on his first year in 2023 with a .252/.320/.441 slash line. While his BA is about the same, he greatly improved is OBP and Slugging Percentage.

Games of the Day

The Angels visit the Yankees with Jose Soriano taking on Clarke Schmidt. I’m more interested in the contrast between Mike Trout and Aaron Judge. Did you know both are seasonal age 33? Trout, of course, came up at seasonal age 19 and after an unimpressive first season, led the majors in bWAR five years in a row, and for eight straight years produced bWARs of at least 6.9. Since then injuries ate away at Trout’s ability to produce offense. Judge did not have the wear and tear young, and may be producing the greatest age 30+ seasons in the PED testing era with over 30 bWAR since the start of 2022.

Trout will go down as a great waste of talent, as the Angels failed to build a winner around him. I do wonder if the situation arises where Trout can be traded to a potential World Series champ if he will accept the trade. I actually think he would fit in very well with the Rays, but the Angels would need to eat a lot of Trout’s salary to make that happen.

Dylan Cease and the Padres get to face Shohei Ohtani of the Dodgers on Ohtani’s return to the mound. Cease suffers an off year. Despite a higher K rate, the opposition BABIP is up to .330 versus his career average of .294. Ohtani stands 38-19 in 86 career starts with a 3.01 ERA. He averaged 11.36 K per 9. Don’t expect him to go more than two innings on the evening,

Enjoy!

Trout Season

Mike Trout of the Angels came into today’s action against the Rays looking more like Ken Phelps than of the greatest hitters in the game. He owned a .179/.320/.436 slash line, He drew walks and hit for power, but little else.

Thursday, the more traditional Trout emerged. He went two for five with two home runs, driving in three as the Angels take the game 11-1. The Angels go to and 8-4 record on the season without Trout hitting at his best. He’s up to .205/.327/.568, still Phelps like, but a few more two hit games could change that. A return of the .300/.400/.500 Trout gives this lineup plenty of upside.

Trout Still Out

The Angels shut down the rehabilitation of Mike Trout.

Trout had surgery May 3 to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee.

“We’re going to shut down his rehab in general,” Angels general manager Perry Minasian said of Trout. “He’s going to get reevaluated. He still doesn’t feel good, so we’ll see where that goes.”

Minasian did not reveal any details about Trout’s setback and did not specify how much more time the 11-time All-Star will miss.

ESPN.com

On top of that, Anthony Rendon returned to the illjured list.

In general, this is why I don’t think a team should extend player contracts past the age of 30. Let the contract run out, and see where the player is. The Angels spent a log of money of nothing.

Best Living

With the passing of Willie Mays, it’s a tough decision on who takes the mantle of greatest living ballplayer. When Joe DiMaggio died, Mays was pretty much a lock to take over. It may very well be Barry Bonds, which would be fitting since Mays was a second father to him. I don’t think people would go for that due to the steroid issue, however. It might also be Pete Rose, who has his own scandals weighing on him.

A friend and I are spit-balling names, and our list includes, in no particular order:

Griffey would fit the mold of the great centerfielder. Ryan pitched extremely well into his 40s. Ripken transformed the position of shortstop. Brett and Schmidt were great hitters and great defenders at the hot corner. Henderson was known for his speed, but hit for plenty of power. Pujols and Trout simply put runs on the board. Maddux may be the best pitcher I’ve ever seen. Cabrera led the Marlins to a World Series title his rookie year and went on to win a triple crown.

I’m sure you can think of others, please leave names in the comments. I think this is a much tougher choice than we faced in the late 1990s.

Update: Should have included Reggie Jackson and Derek Jeter.

Trout Kneeds Surgery

Mike Trout won’t have a healthy season in 2024:

Angels superstar Mike Trout, hoping for a fully healthy season after being significantly limited by injury the past three years, needs knee surgery, general manager Perry Minasian said Tuesday.

Trout has a torn meniscus in his left knee, Minasian said.

The procedure, which is believed to be scheduled for Friday, isn’t considered to be season ending. At this point, it is not known how long Trout will be out.

ESPN.com

For the last few season the Angels needed a healthy Trout and a healthy Anthony Rendon. Once again, both are on the illjured list.

Best Batter Today

Juan Soto of the Yankees solidifies his spot at the top of the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings with a perfect day at the plate in a 6-4 comeback win over the Blue Jays. Soto collects two walks and three hits, including home run for a game score of 82, the best of the day.

Soto ranks high in RBI Percentage, the percent of runners on when he bats that get driven in. Number one on that list is number two in the Rankings, Mookie Betts of the Dodgers. Betts posted a rare bad game on Wednesday as he took an 0 for 4 in a 2-0 Washington win.

Yordan Alvarez of the Astros collected two hits, including a home run in a 5-4 Braves win. His teammate, Jose Altuve, went two for four with a walk to move into the fifth slot. In between them was an opponent of the day, Marcell Ozuna. He went one four five, but the one hit was his 8th home run of the season. That’s ties him with Mike Trout for the MLB lead in homers. Ozuna ranks fourth, while Trout is up to 77th.

Trout Goes Out

After striking out the first two Angels, Corbin Burnes gets burned by Mike Trout, who takes him out of the park in center for a 1-0 Angels lead over the Orioles after half an inning. Trout didn’t pull the pitch, otherwise it might have been caught in the deeper Orioles leftfield.

The Stateside Season is underway.

Update: The Orioles load the bases with no one out in the bottom of the first, and score two runs on a ground out and a single to lead the Angels 2-1 at the end of one.

Update: Patrick Sandoval of the Angels exits with two out in the second inning, having allowed five runs so far. The Orioles are up 5-1.

Hot and Cold

For a while I thought it was possible to make an improvement to the Beat the Streak Picks by determining the current probability of the hotness or coldness of a hitter. It strikes me as a hidden Markov model (HMM). The idea would be to assign one of three states to a player at a given time; cold, normal, hot. Since it is difficult to know the current state of the player, these hidden states make up the hidden part of the model. On each sequence (a game), the model emits an observation, in this case, the quality of the game.

For example, if you are in the normal state and have a normal game, one would postulate that the player stayed in the normal state. But a high quality game or a low quality game might signify a transition to one of the other states.

Efficient algorithms exist to learn the probabilities of transitioning from one state to another, and also the probabilities of a particular observation given the current state. To train these models, however, we need games that are tagged with a good representation of the state.

Tagging can be difficult, however. One way would be to hire people to look at a game log for a player and find the hot, not, and normal areas of the sequence. I tried that myself, and found it rather difficult to eyeball.

Instead, I used my version of an offensive game score to do the tagging. I looked at a six day sequence going forward from a particular game and took the average game score. Average game scores less than 46 were considered Cold. Average game scores greater than 56 were considered Hot. Those in between were considered normal.

I ran the tagger for six players and generated a series of averages based on the state to see if the tagger worked decently. Here are the results:

Averages per game by State

There are four types of hitters represented here. Freeman and Trout are superstar batters. Owen and Bradley were known more for their defense, and they are seldom hot. They are in fact cold as much as they are normal. Ken Phelps is the power hitter who walks a lot. His profile is similar to the defensive specialist, seldom hot but very often cold. Finally, Arraez is the great hitter with little power, and the lack of power keeps him from being hot often. He is seldom cold, however.

Note that for each player, the hot state is associated with a low strikeout rate, while K rates don’t vary that much between normal and cold. It would seem that in hot states players are seeing the ball well and really driving it.

The column I’m most interested in would be the last one, percentage games with a hit. Note how even the weak hitters are well over 80% when they are hot. If one is trying to choose between Arraez and Freeman on a particular day, knowing if one is hot might make a big difference.

So the idea would be to used this automated tagging to train an HMM. Use the HMM to figure out the probability of a player being hot at a particular part of time, then train a new neural network to take advantage of that parameter.

Wish me luck.

The Loyal Angels

True Grich notes that Shohei Ohtani leaving Anaheim makes him appreciate the loyalty of Tim Salmon, Jered Weaver, and Mike Trout to the team.

Salmon, Weaver and Trout’s loyalty isn’t lost on me.  I don’t think it’s lost on most fans.  There’s something special about players who come up through the organization and stay with the organization throughout most, if not all of their career.

Ohtani leaving, makes me appreciate Trout’s loyalty more than ever.

Trout Tank

The Angels say that Mike Trout won’t be traded:

Minasian responded to the annual questions about Trout’s future with the underachieving Angels by providing the same answer he has given in past years — and the same answer given by owner Arte Moreno’s previous general managers.

“Mike Trout will not be getting traded, 100%,” Minasian told MLB.com and other outlets.

Chron.com

I would think Trout would welcome a trade to a team with a chance of winning. If not this season, I suspect that will happen sooner than later if the Angels keep failing to win.

November 16, 2023

Fake Excitement

Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times puts a damper on the Angels introduction of Ron Washington as the new manager:

More than 100 people packed the fourth-floor room at Angel Stadium. The overwhelming majority of them, however, were team employees, who were basically called upon to be seat fillers. They applauded when Washington was presented. They laughed at the jokes he told. They gave him a standing ovation when it was over.

There was nothing convincing about the spectacle because the purported excitement over the next season described by Randazzo doesn’t exist. Nothing has changed. Regardless of whether they re-sign Shohei Ohtani, the Angels are still the Angels. Whatever excitement they are projecting is entirely make-believe, and everyone knows it.

LATimes.com

His main thesis involves the health and cost of Mike Trout and Anthony Rendon. Even if healthy, both careers are on the downside. Trout at least has hit well when he plays, but even he saw a big drop-off in power last season.

The last ten years of baseball in Anaheim should be a lesson for all clubs on how to not run a ballclub. The Angels wasted one of the greatest talents ever to play the game.

Best Batter Today

Mookie Betts of the Dodgers returns to the top five of the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings with two doubles and two walks in five plate appearances in a 7-0 win over the Giants. Betts also drove in two runs, giving him 105 RBI from the leadoff slot, a new record.

Betts’ RBIs are the most by a leadoff hitter in a single season, two more than Charlie Blackmon’s 103 for Colorado in 2017. Betts’ double in the eighth extended the lead to 7-0.

APNews.com

One thing I like to look at is RBI by player slot. This almost always goes to someone batting third or fourth. My list goes back to 1974, and only two seasons, 2014 and 2015, produced an RBI slot leader outside of that range. In 2014, Mike Trout drove in 109 RBI from the second slot, and in 2015, Josh Donaldson drove in 113 RBI from the second slot. Betts’ 105 RBI makes him the slot leader for 2023, and it will be very impressive if he winds up the slot leader for the season. He currently leads by four RBI over Pete Alonso of the Mets and Ronald Acuna Jr.of the Braves, also a lead-off hitter. In fact three of the top ten RBI slot leaders come from the top of the lineup as Marcus Semien of the Rangers owns 95 RBI.

The 2023 season already ranks second in the 1974+ time period for most RBI by lead-off hitters at 2250, 70 RBI behind the 2019 season. Part of this is the universal DH, but part of it might be the realization that the Lineup Analysis Tool tendency to put great hitters at the top of the order and a good OBP hitter ninth is in fact a good strategy. That strategy will get less push back with a DH than batting at pitcher eighth.

Acuna remains at the top of the list with the Braves against the Nationals rained out on Saturday. Juan Soto of the Padres singled and walked in a 5-2, eleven innings St. Louis win, putting Soto in second place. Fourth place belongs to Yordan Alvarez of the Astros, one for four with a double in a 3-2 Royals win. The fifth slot goes to Julio Rodriguez of the Mariners, Also one for four with a double, his in a 2-0 Rangers win as Texas takes control of the AL West race.

Yandy Diaz of the Rays generated the best game score of Saturday, an 83. He went four for four with a double and a home run in a 7-6 walk-off win over the Blue Jays. He raised his BA to .327 and his OBP to .407, both rank second in AL. Diaz currently ranks seventh in the ratings.

Home Runs on a Date

Jose Ramirez of the Guardians homered on Sunday, his birthday. It was the fourth time he homered on his birthday. That’s two short of the record for homering on a birthday, held by Mark Reynolds (August 3rd) and Alex Rodriguez (July 27). Four batters hit five birthday homers, including active player Mike Trout.

This made me ask, what is the record for home runs on a particular day? Going back to 1920, the most on a particular day belongs to Albert Pujols, who hit a total of 13 home runs on May 30th. Barry Bonds (Aug. 18th), Gil Hodges (May 30th), and Jimmie Foxx (June 8th) all had 12 home runs on a date.

There’s something about May 30th.

Ohtani Tear

Shohei Ohtani of the Angels suffered a torn ligament in his right elbow and will not pitch again in 2023:

The Angels don’t yet know whether Ohtani will need surgery to repair the UCL ligament nearly five years after the two-way superstar first had Tommy John surgery.

“A tough day for him,” Minasian said. “Tough day for all of us.”

The injury will have a massive effect on baseball’s free agent market this winter with Ohtani headed to unrestricted free agency. The uniquely valuable American League MVP front-runner was expected to receive the most lucrative contract offers in baseball history after six landmark seasons with the Angels, but now much will depend on the health of his pitching elbow.

ESPN.com

He played the second game of the doubleheader, so at the moment it appears he can hit. Right now I’d say Ohtani is right in the middle of the best and worst case scenarios laid out here. If he opts for surgery now, he might be ready to help in a stretch run in 2023, but the big contract would likely be gone. Or, someone signs him to hit and hope he can return as quickly as Bryce Harper did this season and contribute in May of next season.

On top of that, the Reds swept the Angels in the doubleheader, and Mike Trout went back on the illjured list. Here’s a picture of the Angels front office on Tuesday.

Hamate Trout

Mike Trout of the Angels suffered a broken wrist:

“I can’t really describe the pain I felt,” Trout said on Monday. “I’ve never felt that pain ever. I’ve never had wrist problems or anything. Just a freak thing.”

MLB.com

The article does not mention how long Trout will be sidelined, but six to eight weeks would be a safe bet. This will be the third year in a row that Trout missed significant time due to an injury.

The Angels are six games back in the AL West, and this makes a comeback much more difficult.

Best Batter Today

Freddie Freeman of the Dodgers and Aaron Judge of the Yankees remain 1-2 respectively in the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings despite contributing little to the 8-4 Dodgers victory, a game that saw seven home runs. Freeman went 0 for 5 to end his 20 game hit streak, leaving Marcus Semien of the Rangers on top. Judge took an 0 for 4. His teammates, Josh Donaldson and Giancarlo Stanton returned to the lineup after healing from injuries. Each homered, Donaldson twice.

Mookie Betts of the Dodgers starred in the game, with a four for four that included two home runs and a walk. His game score of 90 proved to be the highest of the day and puts Betts fifth in the rankings.

Third place belongs to Yordan Alvarez of the Astros. He homered and singled in a 6-2 win over the Angels. Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout continued to be unable to hit Framber Valdez. Juan Soto sits in fourth place as he drew a walk in a 2-1 Cubs victory.

With four shutouts on Friday, June 2nd turned out to be the lowest scoring day of the season so far (minimum seven games played). The fourteen contests generated just 6.5 runs per game, beating out by a wide margin the 7.2 R/G on May 2nd. Strikeouts were high, and non-home run hits were low. There were home runs, but not much else. Walks were low also. Just a well pitched evening.

Games of the Day

The Mariners travel to Texas to take on the Rangers with Luis Castillo and Jon Gray on the mound. Castillo proved to be a good acquisition for Seattle, now 8-4 with a 2.93 ERA in 22 starts. He struck out 153 batters in 129 innings. Gray got hit hard at home this season, with a 4.09 ERA thanks to five home runs in 22 innings. He allowed three home runs on the road in 35 2/3 innings, for a 2.02 ERA.

The Guardians and Twins play game two of their series with Aaron Civale facing Bailey Ober. Civale makes his third start of the season. He allowed just two walks and no home runs in his first 12 2/3 innings. Ober tries to reach four wins for the first time in his career. He allowed all three of his home runs at home this season.

The Angels send Shohei Ohtani in his role as pitcher/DH against the Astros and Framber Valdez. Ohtani is blowing away batters again this season, with 90 K in 65 innings. The Sushi Slammers, Mike Trout and Ohtani, slug rather poorly against Valdez, with only one extra-base hit against Valdez in 44 combined at bats.

Finally, the Yankees visit the Dodgers with Luis Serverino battling Clayton Kershaw. Back from injury, Serverino owns a 1.59 ERA in two starts. He allowed just five hits in 11 1/3 innings. Kershaw is next to untouchable at home this season, 3-1 with a 1.13 ERA. He allowed 16 hits and one walk with striking out 34. The also features the top two hitters in the majors right now, Freddie Freeman and Aaron Judge.

Enjoy!

Long, Long, Balls

Shohei Ohtani of the Angels hit the longest home run of his career Wednesday afternoon, 459 feet:

Ohtani increased his career total to 13 multihomer games with his first this season. He now has nine home runs of at least 450 feet in his career, all coming in the past three seasons and tied with Ronald Acuna Jr. and Salvador Perez for second in MLB in that span, behind only C.J. Cron, who has 16. He also has 12 career home runs in 31 games against the White Sox, his most against any team not in the American League West.

Trout pulled a hanging curve for his 13th home run and longest of the season. It was the 10th of his career of at least 460 feet, and since he entered the league in 2011, the only players with more at that distance are Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge.

It’s about time we came up with a nickname for this pair, a la the Bash Brothers. The Sushi Slammers?

Best Batter Today

Yandy Diaz of the Rays returns to the top of the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings. He collects a single, walk, and a hit by pitch in 3-2 Yankees win. Yordan Alvarez of the Astros takes second place with a double and walk in a 7-5 Seattle victory.

Sean Murphy and Ronald Acuna Jr.of the Braves rank third and fourth respectively after a 5-4 win over the Orioles. Murphy posted an 0 for 3 with a hit by pitch, while Acuna singled and walked.

Mike Trout of the Angles singled in a 10-1 Texas win for fifth place. Ten points separate one through in the rankings.

Lourdes Gurriel, Jr. of the Diamondbacks post a four for five game with a home run, good for a game score of 76, the best on Saturday. Gurriel raises his slash line to .300/.345/.464.

Best Batter Today

Friday brings another shakeup to the top five of the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings. Sean Murphy of the Braves uses a two for four game with a home run against the Orioles to move into first place. The catcher raises his slash line to .296/.439/.653 and collected multiple hits in four of his last six games. In a game with lots of offense, Baltimore emerges victorious 9-4.

Yandy Diaz of the Rays drops to second place after homering in four PA in a 5-4 win over the Yankees. Yordan Alvarez of the Astros keeps on keeping in the top five with the same line as Diaz, Houston beating Seattle 6-4.

Mike Trout of the Angels collected two hits and a walk in a 5-4, ten inning win over the Rangers, putting Trout in fourth place. It also puts the Angles percentage points behind the Rangers at the top of the AL West. Luis Arraez of the Marlins rounds out the top five with a three for four afternoon in a 4-1 Cubs victory. He is now hitting .437.

Ryan Noda of the Athletics helps Oakland to rare win as he goes three for four with two doubles and two walks in a 12-8 victory over the Royals. That works out to a game score of 76, the best on the day. Noda comes to the majors for his first season at seasonal age 27. He was always old for his minor league level where he showed great on-base skills and okay power. That’s what he’s doing at the MLB level this season, despite an extremely high strikeout rate. He K’d in over 1/3 of his plate appearances, but makes up for it with a .400 BABIP. His power comes from doubles, not home runs, so he’s not a total three-true outcome batter, but he’s close.

May 4, 2023

Best Batter Today

Another day, another shakeup of the top five in the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings. Freddie Freeman of the Dodgers moves back to the top of the list as he collects a double, walk, and a sacrifice fly in the 10-6 win over the Phillies.

Ronald Acuna Jr.and Sean Murphy of the Braves stand two and five respectively as they participate in the 14-6 blowout of the Marlins. Acuna homers and walks, driving in three runs, while Murphy singles twice, walks, and gets hit by a pitch. On top of that, their teammate Ozzie Albies posts the highest game score of the day, an 81, and Marcell Ozuna comes in right behind him at an 80. Albies goes four for five with two doubles and a home run, while Ozuna posts a three for five day with two home runs and five RBI.

Yordan Alvarez of the Astros ranks third after a one for four in a 4-2 Giants win. Mike Trout of the Angels homers and gets hit by a pitch in a 6-4 win at St. Louis to rank fourth.

The rankings this morning make clear just how much talent the majors employ right now. One through six are separated by less than two points. One through twenty are separated by about 10 points, and one through 34 are separated by about 20 points.

The talent in that top 20 is diverse as well. There are sluggers like Pete Alonso, there are on-base specialists like Steven Kwan, and then there are the great all-around hitters like Freeman and Acuna. There are veterans and newcomers. Most of the defensive positions are represented. I’m hoping this indicates a move away from the cookie cutter hitter. It’s a more interesting game this way.

Best Batter Today

Luis Arraez of the Marlins moves back into the top slot in the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings. He posts a one for three day with a sacrifice fly, the SF coming in the bottom of the eighth inning and driving in the winning run in a 4-3 win over the Cubs. Arraez lowers his batting average to .438. Yordan Alvarez of the Astros climbs to second place as he singles and walks in a 4-3 win over the Phillies.

Brandon Nimmo of the rained-out Mets sits in fourth place. Player of the Month Matt Chapman of the Blue Jays goes three for five with two doubles to tie a record for doubles in April. Seattle wins the extra-inning slugfest 10-8.

Two players post a game score of 77, best on the day. Catcher Jonah Heim of the Rangers goes three for four with two doubles, a home run, and three RBI in a 15-2 blowout of the Yankees. Heim, in his fourth season, never had an OBP above .300, but is slashing .303/.386/.592 so far in 2023. Taylor Walls of the Rays goes four for five with a home run in a wild game won by the White Sox 12-9. The game featured six home runs, five hit by pitches, and a melt down by the Rays bullpen as the White Sox score seven times in the bottom of the ninth inning to win the game. Walls like Heim, had a MLB history of week hitting, but is off to a .302/.397/.571 slash line to start 2023. He’s listed as a shortstop, but looks more like a Ben Zobrist type, playing all over the infield right now.

Best Batter Today

Mike Trout of the Angels takes over the top slot in the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings as Saturday shakes up the top five again. Trout posts a game score of 80, third highest on the day as he goes three for four with two home runs. The Brewers prevail, however, 7-5. Trout owns a .320/.408/.612 slash line, basically what we expect from the greatest hitter of this generation.

Luis Arraez of the Marlins drops to second place, as he goes three for four with a walk to raise his batting average to .442. He is putting on a clinic of what can be accomplished by not striking out.

Yordan Alvarez of the Astros returns to the lineup and posts a a two for three day with a walk to sit in third place. The Phillies triumph, however, 6-1. Jose Ramirez of the Guardians reaches base four times on three singles and a walk, but the Red Sox take the game in ten innings 8-7. Best Batter Today

Ronald Acuna Jr. of the Braves makes his way into the top five of the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings. He ranks second after posting a one for three with two walks, his hit going for a home run. That brings his slash line for the season to .363/.449/.569. Thirteen of his 37 hits have gone for extra bases, including nine doubles, tied for second in the NL. The Braves down the Marlins 6-4 with four runs in the eighth inning.

Brandon Nimmo of the Mets remains at the top of the list as he draws a walk in four trips to the plate in a 4-1 Washington win. He also owns a .449 OBP, and it’s nice to see two lead-off men at the top of heap. Nimmo’s teammate, Jeff McNeill ranks fifth after a two for three with a walk. He owns a .415 OBP.

Alex Bregman of the Astros stands third as draws a walk in four trips, but his RBI on a reach on error in the first innings proves to be the only run of the game as the Astros beat the Rays 1-0. The Astros held the Rays scoreless for the second day in a row.

Fourth place belongs to Mike Trout of the Angels, who drew a walk in five trips in an 11-3 win over the Athletics.

The best game score of the day came off the bat of Paul Goldschmidt of the Cardinals. He posts a four for five game with a double and two home runs for a score of 85. That puts him fourteenth on the list. Goldschmidt is right on his BA and OBA numbers from 2022, but the power is down a bit. Maybe this game marks a turning point for the slugger. The Giants win the game 7-3.
