This Date in 1920

Major League teams played six of seven scheduled games on May 4, 1920. The Tigers and the Indians played the low scoring game of the day in Detroit, the Tigers winning their second game in a row (and second of the year) 2-1. The White Sox and Browns combined for 16 runs in St. Louis. The Browns won easily 12-4.

George Sisler took home the honor for best offensive game of the day. He collected three hits in five at bats, including a home run. He scored and drove in three runs. Sisler played the 1920 season as a 27-year-old, and posted his best year in terms of rWAR, 9.8. He would lead the majors with a .407 BA. He would be an early inductee to the Hall of Fame.

On the pitching side, Hooks Dauss of the Tigers got the complete game win. He allowed an unearned run, four hits, and four walks. He struck out two batters. Dauss would lose 21 games in 1920 despite pitching well. It’s another example of the adage that only good pitchers can lose 20 games.
