Mejia Suspended

Jenrry Mejia runs afoul of the PED police and winds up suspended for 80 games:

Mets righthanded releiever Jenrry Mejia was suspended 80 games without pay after testing positive for Stanozolol, effective immediately, according to Major League Baseball.

Ervin Santana was also suspended for Stanozolol. That’s an old-school steroid that stays in the system for ten days after a dose. Given that Mejia was hurt, he may have tried it to lower inflammation, rather than muscle build. We’ll see what he says. Santana denied he knowingly took the drug.

Games of the Day

The Mets and Nationals play a split-admission double header today, with an interesting pitching match-up. The Mets send Jenrry Mejia in game one, a young pitcher making his 2013 debut, with 55 MLB innings under his belt and a 4.91 career ERA. He’ll face Jordan Zimmermann, one of the Washington aces. Game two features Matt Harvey for the Mets against Ross Ohlendorf, the fifth starter for the Nationals. It would seem to me that the Nats should have a pretty good chance of beating Mejia, so why not send Zimmermann against the Mets ace? Plenty of times this year, Harvey did not get a decision due to lack of offense on the Mets part. Ohlendorf has pitched well, however, and Zimmermann has some neck issues, so maybe Davey Johnson is trying to guarantee one win by pitching Zimmermann in game one.

The Orioles are four games behind Boston in the AL East as they host the Red Sox in a three-game series at Camden Yards. John Lackey and Chris Tillman square off in game one. Lackey’s road ERA is nearly two runs higher than at home, due to 10 of his 14 homers allowed coming away. Tillman allowed 21 homer this year, 16 at home, so don’t be surprised if this game turns out to be a slugfest.

Potential playoff opponents meet in Atlanta as the Cardinals send Adam Wainwright against Mike Minor. Opponents are hitting .299 against Wainwright with runners in scoring position, his only weakness this season. Of course, they only have 97 at bats in that situation, an average of 4 1/2 per start. Minor shows excellent control, with just 28 walks in 130 innings.

Finally, Homer Bailey takes on Clayton Kershaw as the Reds play the Dodgers. Cincinnati stands 4-1 on the west coast trip so far. Bailey’s opposition BA jumps over 80 points on the road, and his opposition slugging jumps 170 points. Kershaw is having an amazing July, with 2 walks and 30 K in 31 innings, leading to a 1.74 ERA.

Enjoy!

Games of the Day

The Mets try to play spoiler as they host the Phillies with Roy Halladay facing Jenrry Mejia. Halladay goes for his 18th win, the fourth time he would reach that level. Roy dominated the Mets this season, 3-0 in three starts with a 1.88 ERA. He’s walked two and struck out 23 in 24 innings without allowing a home run. Mejia makes his second start after spending most of the season in the bullpen. The 20-year-old doesn’t strikeout many batters, leading to his weakness, lots of hits allowed. His minor league strikeout rates are more impressive, so I suspect with a little maturation he’ll get there.

The Cardinals continue their keep hope alive campaign as they play game two of their series with wild card leader Atlanta. Chris Carpenter takes on Mike Minor. The Day by Day Database goes back to 1957, and in that time, Chris Carpenter holds the best winning percentage on the Cardinals for a pitcher with 100 decisions. His Cardinals ERA is the same as Bob Gibson. So far this season, Minor has seen his luck even out. His ERA is a lot worse than it should be given his three true outcomes, but he’s 3-0 despite a 5.33 ERA. I’d guess his defense is doing a poor job of supporting him, but his offense is doing a great job.

Clay Buchholz and Trevor Cahill get to show off their Cy Young credentials side by side as Boston visits Oakland. Buchholz pitched about 59 more innings than in 2009 with five fewer home runs allowed. He’s also allowed five fewer earned runs. Cahill is 13 innings short of his 2009 mark, with 12 fewer home runs allowed an 42 fewer earned runs. Both are also giving up many fewer hits without striking out more batters.

Finally, the battle for the NL West continues with Jonathan Sanchez visiting Clayton Richard as the Giants play the Padres. Sanchez is 0-3 in four starts against the Padres, despite pitching well, posting a 3.08 ERA. Richard, in his four starts against San Francisco posted an ERA one run lower than Sanchez and the opposite record of 3-0.
