Team Offense, Detroit Tigers

The 2022 series on team offense continues with the Detroit Tigers. The Tigers finished tied for twenty second in the majors and tied for eleventh in the American League in 2021 with 4.30 runs scored per game.

This season I am using FanGraphs Roster Resource Depth Charts* as the source of default lineups. That AJ Hinch batting order is plugged into the Lineup Analysis Tool (LAT) using Musings Marcels as the batter projections.   That information produces the following results (Runs per game):

  • Best lineup: 4.73
  • Probable lineup: 4.65
  • Worst lineup: 4.52
  • Regressed lineup: 4.37

These numbers may be an underestimate for the Tigers as it looks like they are prepared to bring Spencer Torkelson and Riley Greene to the majors. The LAT has them with the expected league average OBP and slugging percentage, but both posted good number in the high minors at a young age.

The Tigers have a decent table setting pair at the top of the order with Akil Baddoo and Robbie Grossman. They lack a true power hitter at the moment, although one or both of the rookies might fill in in that regard.

In the how the mighty have fallen department, the LAT places Miguel Cabrera in the eighth slot in a number of the top lineups. The LAT usually puts the worst hitter on the team eighth. Tucker Barnhart gives Cabrera a run for his money, but that Cabrera’s name comes up at all is very disappointing for the once great hitter. If the Tigers turn out to be competitive this year, I suspect it will be very easy to up the offense by coming up with a designated hitter with much better numbers.
