NLCS Summary

The Braves beat the Dodgers four games to two to advance to the World Series. The Braves produced a .260/.321/.422 slash line, while the Dodgers came in at .250/.330/.425. The Braves scored 28 runs to 27 for the Dodgers, even though Los Angeles produced a slightly better slash line. Both teams hit into four double plays. The Dodgers struck out 52 times, while the Braves struck out 68 times.

One difference in the Braves favor was BABIP. The Braves batters owned a .344 BABIP, the Dodgers just .295. That supports the notion that the Braves defense outplayed the Dodgers defense.

The scoring position battle went to the Braves as well. The Dodgers hit .244/.370/.444 in the RISP situation, while the Braves hit .343/.442/.571. The Braves came up just 43 times in that situation, the Dodgers 54 times. This was especially apparent in the seventh inning of game six. The Dodgers delivered one hit with a man in scoring position which left them with men on second and third and no one out. The next three batters K’d with the tying runs on base. Three of the Dodgers losses were by one or two runs; a couple of timely hits and Los Angeles wins the series. It was that close.

The starting pitching did not shine in this series but here the Braves were a bit better than the Dodgers. This is why the Dodgers are receiving so much criticism for the loss. This is a franchise built on great starting pitching, and it just wasn’t there in this series.
