Confidence in Verlander

The Astros signed Justin Verlander to a $25 million, one-year deal:

Verlander became a free agent after completing a $94 million, three-year contract with the Astros. He played in just one game in the past two seasons.

That seems like a lot of money for a pitcher who will be seasonal age 39 in 2022 coming off Tommy John surgery. They also just paid him quite a bit of money for five WAR. If the Astros really value a WAR at $18 million to $19 million, they it seems like a good deal.

Then again, Verlander showed he can undergo major surgery and bounce back just fine. He may very well carry the indestructible physique of Nolan Ryan.
