Grant Brisbee graphs age versus talent for all 30 MLB teams to provide a graphic look at who should contend now and in the future. Note that most teams are on the “should contend” side of the Y axis, meaning we should have some good division and wild card races again. The Nationals are a team in the sweet spot, with a very good team right now, and lots of young talent to keep them winning.
The team that stands out, however, is the Phillies, the least talented team on the chart, and one of the oldest. That’s not something that gets turned around quickly. If that position is not a reason to find a new GM, I don’t know what is. Compare them to the Padres, who suddenly are close to Washington in terms of talent and age. That’s impressive work.
