Rodon Roughed Up

The Blue Jays score six runs on six hits and two walks against the Yankees Carlos Rodon, chasing him after 2 1/3 innings with a man on first. The scored four runs so far in the top of the third inning to extend their lead to 6-1, and the Yankees have a lot of work to do to avoid elimination.

Update: The Yankees respond with two runs so far in the bottom of the third inning and chase Shane Bieber with two out and two on. The bullpens will get a work out in this game.

Playoffs Today

The Mariners travel to Detroit for two games, tied with the Tigers at one game apiece in their ALDS series. Logan Gilbert faces Jack Flaherty. Gilbert owned a 3.44 ERA in 2025, but that ballooned to 4.74 on the road, where he allowed 12 of his 20 home runs. He did pitch well in his one start at Detroit, allowing two unearned runs in 5 1/3 innings, striking out nine. Flaherty’s 4.64 ERA dropped to 4.18 at home. He struck out 109 batters in 92 2/3 innings in Detroit.

The Blue Jays try to take a last bite out of the Big Apple as they face the Yankees in The Bronx with a win sending them to the ALCS. Shane Bieber battles Carlos Rodon. This is Bieber’s third post-season start against the Yankees. He struck out 14 batters in 10 1/3 innings, but also allowed five walks and three home runs as New York won the three-true outcomes batter. Rodon has a similar history overall in the playoffs. Lots of strikeouts are balanced by allowing allowing six home runs in 26 1/3 innings. There might be a lot of long balls tonight.

Suzuki Slugs

Seiya Suzuki puts the Cubs on the board early as he hits a three-run homer in the top of the first inning to give Chicago an early lead against the Brewers. It’s the Cubs fourth home run of the series, we’ll see if this one stands up for a win.

Update: Andrew Vaughn answers in the bottom of the first inning with a three-run homer of his own, and once again, the Cubs lead doesn’t last long.

Phillies Mount a Comeback

The first three Phillies batting in the bottom of the ninth, record hits, with Nick Castellanos just beating a throw to second for the second double of the inning. He drove in two runs to make the score 4-3 in favor of the Dodgers. Blake Treinen failed to record the save, and the Phillies are in a good position to tie the game. They are essentially in the ghost runner situation.

Update: The Phillies try to bunt Castellanos over, but Max Muncy throws him out at third with Mookie Betts covering.

Update: Harrison Bader, with a bad groin, pinch hits and singles to put men on first and second with one out. He leaves for a pinch runner.

Update: Max Kepler grounds into a force at second. First and third with two out, and Roki Sasaki comes in to try to get the final out for the Dodgers.

Update: Trea Turner bats. He grounds out to second base, Freddie Freeman making a great pick on a low throw to save the game.

The Dodgers in 4-3, and go up 2-0 in the series as they only need to win one game at home to advance to the NLCS.

Dodgers Score

A single, double, and a ground ball to Phillies shortstop Trea Turner leads to Teoscar Hernandez scoring the first run of the game in the seventh inning. Enrique Hernandez, of course, drove in the run. Turner threw home, but the throw was forward of the plate and T. Hernandez got his foot in ahead of the tag.

Update: Will Smith hits a two-out single and drives in two more runs as the Dodgers take a 3-0 lead. Smith did not start, but came in after a pinch hitter for the starting catcher, Ben Rortvedt.

Update: Shohei Ohtani singles to drive in the fourth run of the game.

Playoffs Today

The Dodgers and Phillies start off day two of the NLDS at 6 PM EDT with Blake Snell facing Jesus Luzardo. Snell owns a good post-season record of 5-3 with a 3.23 ERA, blowing away batters with 70 K in 55 2/3 innings. He has allowed seven home runs, which plays into a Phillies strength. Luzardo, despite 16 K in 14 2/3 post-season innings, allowed 20 hits, four of them for home runs, for a 6.14 ERA. The Dodgers lead the series 1-0.

The Cubs try to even their series with the Brewers as Shota Imanaga takes on Aaron Ashby. Imanaga pitched decently against Milwaukee this season, with a 3.57 ERA in three starts. The Brewers won two of those games, however. Ashby posted a 2.16 ERA for the season, mostly out of the bullpen. In his one start as an opener this season he pitched two no-hit innings, striking out three.

Sweepless in Seattle

The Mariners defeat the Tigers 3-2 to prevent a potential sweep in the series. The two-three-four hitters for the Mariners produced all the runs, with Jorge Polanco taking Tarik Skubal deep twice, and Cal Raleigh and Julio Rodriguez hitting back-to-back doubles for the winning run.

There was great pitching all around in another low scoring game. The teams head to Detroit for two games on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Blue Jays Head for a Sweep

The Blue Jays beat the Yankees 13-7 to take a 2-0 lead in the ALDS. Toronto got a near perfect start from Trey Yesavage, but New York had a field day against the bullpen. Toronto put a ton of balls in play against Max Fried, then continued to score once he was out of the game. The Blue Jays played the Yankees game, collecting five home runs and three doubles among their 15 hits. The Yankees will need to bring the series back to Toronto if they hope to reach the ALCs.

October 5, 2025 October 5, 2025

Yesavage Done

The Blue Jays pull Trey Yesavage after 5 1/3 no-hit innings against the Yankees. He threw 78 pitches. He walked one and struck out 11. He’s likely to get the win as Toronto leads New York 12-0.

Update: Aaron Judge singles to break up the no-hitter, and Cody Bellinger follows with a home run to get the Yankees on the board. Down 12-2, they have a long way to go.

October 5, 2025

Grand Guerrero

The Blue Jays load the bases with no one out in the bottom of the fourth inning, along the way chasing Max Fried from the game. With one out, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. comes up, and as John Smoltz notes his timing, blasts a ball into the leftfield bleachers for a grand slam. He’s come alive at the right time, three for three so far today, and the Blue Jays lead the Yankees 9-0.

Update: Dalton Varsho adds a home run to his two doubles and the Blue Jays lead 11-0.

October 5, 2025 October 5, 2025

Bat on the Ball

The Blue Jays keep putting the bat on the ball and the hits keep coming. Thirteen of the fifteen Toronto batters put the ball in play against Max Fried of the Yankees, and seven of those wound up hits. They’ve hit the ball hard, and hit the ball soft, and the runners keep advancing. They score three more run in the bottom of the third inning and lead the Yankees 5-0.

Meanwhile, seven of the ten Yankees who came to the plate struck out.

October 5, 2025

Long Hits

The Blue Jays get a double by Daulton Varsho leading off the bottom of the second, and he winds up on third as Aaron Judge of the Yankees misplayed the ball. It didn’t matter as Ernie Clement homered on the next pitch to give Toronto an early 2-0 lead.

Trey Yesavage got four of his first six outs on the K.

Playoffs Today

Because the playoffs are not long enough, the senior circuit gets three days off in a five-game series and the AL takes center stage for game two of the League Division Series (LDS). Note that in a sweep, teams get four days off before the start of the League Championship series, plenty of time for fans to forget the playoffs are happening. There is no need for a travel day between games four and five. Teams travel from one city to another without an off day all year. Time to get rid of that ridiculous waste of time.

The Yankees face the Blue Jays at 4 PM EDT with Max Fried taking on rookie Trey Yesavage. Fried made a great start early this season against the Toronto, a high run quality start late, and in between gave up 10 runs in 11 1/3 innings. The Blue Jays saw him enough that they should not be surprised by anything Sunday afternoon. Yesavage owns three MLB starts, all again teams with two-named locations. He has yet to allow a home run in 14 innings. In his very short minor league career, he allowed eight homers in 98 innings.

At 8 PM EDT, 5 PM PDT, the Mariners try to make the Tigers sweepless in Seattle. That may be tough as Detroit sends Tarik Skubal to the mound against Luis Castillo. Skubal went at least six innings in each of his four post-season starts. Even with one poor start against Cleveland in 2024, his ERA in the playoffs stands at 2.02, and he allowed just one home run in 26 2/3 innings. Castillo pitched well in his three post-season starts as well, owning a 1.83 ERA. He walked just one batter in 19 2/3 innings while striking out 19.

Just One Hit

The Tigers beat the Mariners in eleven innings Saturday night to take a 1-0 lead in the best of five ALDS. The Mariners bullpen entered a 2-2 game in the sixth inning and pitched five no hit innings, walking two along the way. In the top of the eleventh, Carlos Vargas issued the third walk to Spencer Torkelson, his second of the game. He moved to second on a wild pitch, but Vargas struck out the next two batters, bringing the pen’s K total to eight. Zach McKinstry followed with a single up the middle, breaking a personal hitless streak and the tie. This gives the Tigers home field advantage, with their ace, Tarik Skubal pitching Sunday night.

The Tigers have been on the road a long time and are running out of clean clothes:

“Everybody’s coming in trying to get laundry done,” reliever Tommy Kahnle said after the Tigers’ 3-2 win in 11 innings over the Mariners to open their AL Division Series on Saturday night. “Guys are running out of underwear. We’re running out of socks. It’s been interesting. And we’re all just riding it, enjoying the moment.”

Baseball teams tend to stay at nice hotels, and nice hotels tend to have laundry services. They cost a lot, but these players are making a lot of money. Laundry shouldn’t be a problem.

Punishing the Pen

The Yankees and the Blue Jays played a close game for six innings, Toronto up 2-1 in the seventh inning after the New York could get only one run out of a bases loaded, no out situation in the top of the sixth. In the bottom of the seventh, the Blue started punishing the Yankees bullpen, scoring four runs in the seventh and the eighth inning to win the game 10-1. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Alejandro Kirk led the way, combining for three home runs, two by Kirk. The team managed 14 hits, ten of them against the Yankees pen.

So far, the bye teams have combined for 19 runs in two games, and the Phillies are up 3-0 on the Dodgers in the third.

October 4, 2025

J Triple Realmuto

The Phillies go up 2-0 on the Dodgers as JT Realmuto triples with two on start the scoring in the second NLDS game of the day. Shohei Ohtani allowed a walk, single, and then the ball that sneaked by the Dodgers outfielders to the wall in right-center. Realmuto owns 35 career triples in the regular season, but this was his first in the post season.

He scores on a sac fly to make the score 3-0 in favor of the Phillies.

Brewers Win

Milwaukee beats the Cubs 9-3 to take a 1-0 lead in their NLDS. The Cubs offense did what they do well, hitting three home runs. The Brewers did what they did well better, collecting 13 hits in 37 at bats, doing an outstanding job of putting balls in play and finding holes.

Jackson Chourio did leave the game after his third hit with a hamstring injury, which would hurt the Brewers if he is out for a while. Overall, however, the time off appeared to have no negative effect on Milwaukee.
