Which one of these pitchers should gets more votes for the Cy Young award?
| Stat, 2013 | Pitcher 1 | Pitcher 2 |
|---|---|---|
| K per 9 | 9.52 | 9.96 |
| BB per 9 | 1.89 | 2.22 |
| HR per 9 | 0.92 | 0.74 |
| ERA | 2.90 | 3.01 |
| Innings | 195 2/3 | 194 1/3 |
It’s very close, and I could see them splitting votes, as some use their ERA as a tie breaker, while others value the strikeouts and home runs. However, I suspect it won’t be close as pitcher one is Chris Sale, who beat pitcher two, Max Scherzer, Monday night. Interestingly, Scherzer has 5.9 WAR to 4.9 WAR for Sale according to FanGraphs. Their WAR is the same based on runs allowed, but Max wins on FDP-Wins:
FDP-Wins – BABIP and Sequencing wins above average, also the difference between RA9-Wins and WAR
The Baseball Reference WAR calculation has Sale best in the majors, however.
The big problem, however, is that Sale is 11-12, while Scherzer is 19-3 and playing for a division winner. Max is having a tough time winning his 20th game, while Sale has walked 4 and struck out 26 in his last three starts. Max would be a deserving award winner, but I hope the voters at least suffer some angst when casting their ballots.

You just made me think a lot more of Scherzer than I did before now. Up ’til now, I really hadn’t looked at his stats for the season & just keep hearing his W-L record — which really means nothing to me. So I figured there was nothing else of interest in his stats since nobody’s really been talkin’ him up they did Verlander a couple years ago.
Devon » This isn’t a Lamar Hoyt situation. Scherzer is more than deserving of the award.
