Games of the Day

The Marlins and Diamondbacks play the first ever doubleheader in Phoenix. A scheduling issue forced a change from a Thursday game to a Wednesday twin bill. Tyler Skaggs will make his major league debut for Arizona in game one. The twenty-year-old has excellent K/BB/HR rates in his minor league career, and was 4-2 with a 2.91 ERA in 52 2/3 innings at AAA this season.

A double header sweep, coupled with a San Francisco or Pittsburgh loss could be a big boost for the DBacks, as they would gain a game and a half on the leaders in the division and the second wild card slot.

The Nationals go for a sweep of the Braves as Ross Detwiler hosts Kris Medlen. Since moving to the starting rotation, Medlen is 3-0 with a 1.05 ERA, with four walks and 22 strikeouts in 25 2/3 innings. Detwiler is proving to be a quality fifth starter. Since returning to the rotation after the Wang injury, Ross is 3-2 with a 3.15 ERA. His strikeouts are low, but his walks are miniscule.

A win gives the Nationals a comfortable eight game lead in the NL East.

The White Sox go for a sweep of the Yankees with Phil Hughes facing Chris Sale. A Chicago win would put them 3 1/2 games behind the Yankees for best record in the AL, and might move Texas into the lead. Hughes has a strange home/road split. He strikes out batters and gives up home runs better than he does at home, but his road ERA is almost two runs higher. Sale owns a 1.80 ERA at home, where he’s walked just 11 batters in 70 innings.

Finally, the Giants go for a sweep of the Dodgers as Matt Cain takes on Chris Capuano. Matt is on a two-year roll allowing a low batting average with runners in scoring position. In that time, batters are hitting .188/.268/.274 in that situation. Capuano sports a 2.17 ERA at home this season.

Enjoy!
