Games of the Day

The final eight home openers take place today, staring in the Bronx as the Angels face the Yankees. This will be Albert Pujols‘s first trip to the new Yankee Stadium. In the old park he went 3 for 10 with a home run, a walk and a hit by pitch, pretty much what you might expect from Albert in a short series. Ervin Santana faces Hiroki Kuroda on the mound.

The Rays meet the Red Sox as Boston starts the 101st season at Fenway Park (the 100th anniversary celebration happens next Friday). David Price challenges Josh Beckett. Price, a southpaw, pitches well at Fenway with a 1.75 ERA in four starts. He has been a bit wild, however, with just 13 K and 12 BB in 25 2/3 innings. Boston managed just 13 hits against him in those games. Beckett gave up five home runs in his first start. His velocity was down across the board compared to last year, and his fastball came in flatter.

Adam Wainwright takes the ball for the home opener in St. Louis. Long time rivals the Chicago Cubs send Jeff Samardzija to the mound. Jeff pitched a great game in his first start since 2010, walking none, striking out eight, and missing a complete game by 1/3 of an inning. Wainwright gave up three runs in his first start since surgery caused him to miss the 2011 season, but pitched well. He walked one and struck out six in 5 2/3 innings.

Finally, while not a home opener, a pair of crafty pitchers face off in Philadelphia as R.A. Dickey and the Mets visit Cliff Lee and the Phillies. Dickey allowed five hits and four walks in his six innings of work so far, but held opponents 0 for 3 with runners in scoring position to allowed just two runs. Lee baffled right-handed batters in his first start, holding them to a 1 for 16.

Enjoy!
