The Yankees down the Blue Jays and the Rays defeat the Red Sox as AL East week continues. New York came back with four runs in the seventh after Marc Rzepczynski pitched a very good game. He struck out seven and walked one over six innings, but gave up a homer and double to start the seventh, and the Yankees kept it going once the relievers entered to win 8-4.
The Rays hit four home runs, three against starter Brad Penny. The pretty one see his ERA rise to 5.20. David Price walked none and struck out five against a selective Red Sox team for the win, Tampa Bay taking the game 6-4.
So the Yankees take a 2 1/2 game lead in the division, and the Rays reduce the Red Sox lead over them in the wild card race to three. As the Yankees go into a four-game series with the Red Sox, they need to win just one game to come out of the series still in first place. As someone who loves massive tie scenarios, A four game sweep by the Red Sox and a three game sweep of the Mariners by the Rays over the weekend would mean the three teams were separated by just 2 1/2 games. While it’s a bit early to start thinking about this, a five-way tie between the Angels, Rangers, Rays, Red Sox and Yankees would cause quite a bit of fun before the playoffs start.
