Satchel: The Life and Times of an American Legend hits bookstores Tuesday. I’ve read the first chapter and look forward to reading the rest. Author Larry Tye inserts us into the early life of Satchel Paige, showing how he was victimized by his race and how Paige refused act like a victim. He reviews the mystery of his birth date and how he came by the nickname Satchel. The most interesting part to me, however, was the story of how Satchel stay in reform school actually reformed him. He was sent to a school that didn’t turn the students into prison, but taught them how to work and how to be self-reliant, traits that helped make Satchel a legend.
Fresh Air interview the Larry Tye Monday afternoon.
