Preparation

The Red Sox beat the Yankees 3-1 in the third well pitched game of the day. The key moment of the game came in the top of the seventh inning. Max Fried came out to get one last left-handed batter, then left for Luke Weaver. He walked Ceddane Rafaela, then Nick Sogard appeared to single. It was between Aaron Judge and Trent Grisham in right, but it was Judge’s ball, Judge did not rush to the ball, and his threw it in like it was a simple single. Sogard was ready to run on Judge’s injured arm, and beat the throw to second. The Red Sox then got in a left-hander in Masataka Yoshida, who singled in two runs.

The Red Sox were ready to take a extra base, and ready with their pinch hitters when the lefty came out of the game.

They also decided to stretch out Garrett Crochet, who lasted 7 2/3 innings, bringing in Aroldis Chapman for a four out save. That kept some big left-handed bats on the Yankees bench. New York did load the bases with none out in the ninth, but they didn’t have the depth to keep the pressure on Chapman and did not score.

The Red Sox executed perfectly, and now just need to split the last two games in New York to advance to the ALDS.
