Apologies for missing yesterday’s post. I was on the road all day and didn’t get the chance to write. Here’s the link to the standings on the morning of Sept. 16 for completeness. There’s been a lot of upheaval in the top five the last two days, and Matt Olson had the best game score on Monday.
Tuesday belonged to the Mariners as they now occupy the top two positions in the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings. Julio Rodriguez posted a two for four with a double and a walk in a 12-5 win over the Royals to move into first place. Seattle’s tenth win in a row keeps them 1/2 game ahead of the Astros in the AL West. Cal Raleigh went three for five in the game with a double and two home runs to move into second place. His 80 was the third highest game score of the day.
Their teammate, Dominic Canzone, posted the highest game score of the day, a 100. It’s the 24th game score of at least 90 this season and the fifth to reach 100. Canzone went five for five with three home runs, bringing his slash line for the season to .304/.363/.491. He always posted a good isolated power, but until this season never showed the on-base skills to make him an every day player.
Matt Olson of the Braves collected all extra-base hits on Tuesday, going three for ten with a double, triple, and home run in a doubleheader sweep of the Nationals. Olson ranks third. Juan Soto of the Mets went one for four in an 8-3 win over the Padres for fourth place. George Springer of the Blue Jays went three for five in 6-5 win over the Rays, another late comeback win for Toronto. Their magic number is six to win the AL East.
