Injury Day

Pete Alonso of the Mets winds up on the illjured list after Charlie Morton hit him with a pitch Wednesday:

According to the club, he’s likely looking at an absence of three to four weeks.

Alonso currently leads the NL in home runs with 22, four more than second place Max Muncy.

Yordan Alvarez of the Astros also heads to the IL with an oblique strain:

Alvarez ranks second in the AL in homers and slugging percentage behind Aaron Judge of the Yankees.

That puts two of the top hitters in the AL on the IL, which might give others a chance to catch up.

Chris Sale of the Red Sox faces another long absence:

The Boston left-hander has a stress reaction in the scapula bone (shoulder blade), MassLive’s Sean McAdam reported. It will not require surgery, but will require rest and rehab. He’ll be re-evaluated in 3-4 weeks.

He will be out until at least early August.
