This Date in 1920

Independence Day in 1920 saw all eight scheduled games played, but none in the home of the Declaration of Independence. Pennsylvania still banned Sunday baseball. The Phillies played two in Brooklyn with the Dodgers winning both games by scores of 10-1 and 7-0. The World Champion Reds and the Pirates took part in the low scoring game of the day, Cincinnati winning 5-0. At the high end, two game saw fourteen runs scored. The Indians beat the Tigers 11-3, while the Cardinals downed the Cubs 8-6.

Hi Myers of the Dodgers takes home best offensive game of the day honors. In game two of the doubleheader he goes three for three with a home run and a walk. It’s a very good day for the Dodgers centerfielder, as he tripled and walked in the first game. At this point in the season, Myers is in the top five in the NL in hits, doubles, triples, and home runs.

Game two of that same double header also produces the best pitched game of the day, as Burleigh Grimes of the Dodgers tosses a shutout. He allows just four hits and two walks, striking out four. Dutch Ruether of the Reds also throws a four-hit shutout, but walks five batters. The Dodgers rotation now owns an average game score of 61.4 best in the majors. They stand well ahead of the second place Reds, who average 56.9.

Babe Ruth now owns the longest active hit streak in the majors at nineteen games. He’s batting .500 during the streak with seven home runs. Ruth was proving to be a big draw as a record crowd saw him play in Washington that day.

The Yankees, however, fell 5-2. With the Indians winning, Cleveland returned to first place in the AL by percentage points. The White Sox, with a win, were now 5 1/2 games back in third place.

The double header win by Brooklyn put them 2 1/2 games behind the Reds in the NL. The Cardinals, four games back, dropped Chicago to five games out. The Pirates and Braves remained tied for fifth place, six games out.

The Sunday doubleheader, which would become a staple of the game in future seasons, was unusual in 1920. The news story of the game notes that it was the first Sunday twin bill played in the majors that year.
