The Yankees want to give Masahiro Tanaka an extra day of rest between starts this season:
The Yankees have been talking about going to a six-man rotation for a while. Part of the problem is they already lost their fifth starter, Chris Capuano, to a quad injury. Esmil Rogers, Bryan Mitchell, Adam Warren and Chase Whitley are in play for that spot now. But if it is a grab-and-go six-man rotation, reaching down into the minors whenever that starter is needed, that makes the situation a bit easier and more manageable.
The bottom line is the Yankees want to find an extra day of rest for Tanaka for as long as they can, just as they are doing now in spring training.
It’s not clear to me if the Yankees want an actual six-man rotation, or if they just want to make sure Tanaka gets five days off between starts. I always thought teams should do that with the five man rotation, only pitch the fifth starter when the next scheduled starter would only be getting three days of rest. I don’t think a team really wants to give the sixth-best pitcher 27 starts.

Its not that hard really with all the off days. Last year with a 5 man rotation only 8 of his 20 starts came with 4 days rest.
In Japan they usually had 6 days rest because they had 1 off day per week and a 6 man rotations
