The serious injuries keep piling up for the Rangers. First, Prince Fielder needs surgery:
Texas Rangers slugger Prince Fielder is expected to have season-ending fusion surgery Tuesday to repair a herniated disk in his neck.
Fielder’s symptoms got worse earlier this week and he saw spine specialist Dr. Drew Dossett on Thursday morning. It was recommended that he have surgery to take care of the problem, which requires a three- to four-month recovery period that would end his season.
General manager Jon Daniels said Fielder will get a second opinion, but he expects the original recommendation to be confirmed.
They’re also losing Jurickson Profar for most of the season:
Infielder Jurickson Profar has re-strained a muscle in his shoulder and has been shut down. He will be out at least eight to 12 weeks, meaning it could be difficult for him to return this season.
Profar felt pain in the shoulder in spring training, and an MRI revealed the tear. It was something that required rest and not surgery, and the club was conservative with Profar’s rehab. But he’s reinjured the shoulder and won’t do anything until the medical staff can determine what’s next.
…
The Rangers’ trade for Fielder allowed them to eliminate a logjam at middle infield by shipping Ian Kinsler to Detroit and sliding Profar at second base. But he’s yet to start a game there since the trade occurred.
It’s very tough to win when a large number of your players spend significant time on the disabled list. Texas standing a game under .500 right now is actually very good, given the way the team is put together with spare parts.
