The Astros and Athletics completed a five-player deal that send Jed Lowrie to Oakland. Oakland wants Jed to play second or third base.
Fernando Rodriguez, a relief pitcher who made 71 appearances for Houston last year, went to Oakland with Lowrie, while the Astros obtained first baseman Chris Carter, right-hander Brad Peacock and minor league catcher Max Stassi from Oakland.
Carter is not a bad prospect, and seemed to come into his power at the major league level in 2012. Peacock, the former National, strikes out a ton of players but also walks many. Stassi showed a power surge in 2012 in his second year at A+ ball, but doesn’t look like much of a prospect. Maybe he can spy on the opposing team’s signs. 🙂
The trade seems to come down to Lowrie for Carter, with the Astros hoping Peacock find his control. If that happens, this could be a very good deal for Houston.
Update: Dan Moore wishes the Cardinals had acquired Lowrie.

“The trade seems to come down to Lowrie for Carter,…”
I think of more importance to Houston is Lowrie is due $2.5mm while Carter is almost at the minimum.
Peacock has some pretty good upside.
Nice haul for the Astros when you consider they only gave up Melancon for Lowrie and Weiland.
Lowrie is a nice player but makes JD Drew look like Cal Ripken Jr in the durability department by comparison. If he can stay healthy a nice deal for the A’s as well.
A’s liking Red Sox rejects after Reddick and Moss came up big last year (and Kottaras).
Peacock? Is some GM looking for a feather in his cap?
I’m a longtime Astros fan and I’m enjoying the Luhnow rebuild. The team went 15 years without a rebuild and had a great run. Tried to patch it together for a while and it failed big time.
At least there is a definitive plan and it’s taking shape. Being an aging 70-75 win team with nothing on the farm got old quick. There’s a chance the Astros will have the #1 farm after the draft. Pretty amazing turnaround in two years. Half way there.
This team may lose 100 again, but they will be interesting and I think they do better than that and much better in the coming years. It’s morning in Houston I think…
