Down to Two for the NL West

Matt Cain pitched an inspired game Sunday afternoon, holding the Rockies to three this and two runs in a complete game 4-2 Giants win. The Rockies did not get a hit until the eighth inning as Cain extended his scoreless inning streak to 25 innings. Melvin Mora, a pinch hitter, was the only player to do damage to Matt with a two-run homer in the eighth.

Cain did not strike out a batter until the fifth inning, then K’d eight for the game. The Rockies were trying to put the ball in play early, and when that didn’t work they ended up striking out.

The Giants win puts Colorado 4 1/2 games out of first place. It’s going to be very tough for Colorado to tie the Giants at this point; the probability is that they won’t win the NL West. They are four games out of the wild card with seven to play. They cannot afford to lose another game, and as they don’t play any of the teams in front of them anymore, Colorado needs a lot of help. It was a great run, but I believe the Rockies season came to an end today.
