Candidate for Worst Call Ever

Kelly Shoppach was just thrown out trying to go from first to third on a single. The throw beat him by a mile, and Michael Cuddyer walked toward second to tag him on the uniform shirt. On the replay, you see the tag clearly, and the shirt bellows with the touch. The third base umpire called him safe. This is much worse than the Jim Joyce call in Armando Galarraga’s should have been perfect game. That was at least a bang-bang play. There was no excuse for this, the ump was looking right at it.

The Rays scored on the play anyway, and take a 5-4 lead in the top of the tenth inning.

Update: The call doesn’t hurt in terms of runs, as Shoppach doesn’t score. However, the extra out forced Minnesota to use another reliever to get out of the inning, and they’ve now exhausted the bullpen.

Update: The Rays win 5-4. Ben Zobrist and Carl Crawford, setting the table, reached base a combined eight times. The 3-4-5 hitters went 1 for 13 with a walk, however, driving in just one run. Still Ben and Carl managed to score three times.
