We adopted a second dog on Tuesday, but two dogs proved too much for us to handle, so I had to return him to the shelter today. My wife and I are both very sad about it. He’s at the Dakin Pioneer Valley Humane Society in Leverett, MA, and his name is Oscar. He’s 11 years old and 27 pounds, a nice solid dog, very active for his age. He was excellent in the house, no accidents and not a all destructive. He didn’t even climb on the furniture. He loves to go for walks, and is pretty calm until you say, “Let’s go for a walk.” He loves to be petted, and would come over and stick his head under my hand to get some love.
He would be an excellent dog for empty-nesters or an older couple. If you’re interested, or know anyone who is interested, please contact the shelter. I’ve asked them to keep the adoption fee I paid, and pass that saving on to whomever might adopt Oscar. He deserves a nice home for his remaining years. We’ll miss him.

Even though you had to turn him back, it’s great that you were willing to try an older dog. We have three and it can be a handful at times. (Ended up getting a new car to deal with the transportation issues. 🙂
I adopted and older (4.5 years) dog from a no kill shelter. Sparky was born without a left front leg and had to have a rod inserted into his right front leg in order to support weight on it. He’s been a great companion, and then the last couple of times when I boarded him with his old foster mom, when I went to pick him up, he was hanging out with a Chihuahua (and thanks to Les Nesman, I can spell it), so I wound up adopting her as well. Maggie is 9, Sparky is 8, and they are best of friends.
@Rob McMillin: Thanks, Rob.
