Brian Fuentes closes for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. He moved to this team in 2009, and Mike Scioscia gave him 19 more save opportunities than he ever received from the Rockies. He responded by beating his career high in saves by 17.
Fuentes blows batters away, striking out 526 in 477 innings for his career. Those numbers were down in 2009, as he K’d just 46 in 55 innings. Not surprisingly, his 3.93 ERA was the highest since 2004, even though he moved out of Colorado. One big change in moving to the American League was that right-handed batters hit the lefty better. In his years with Colorado, righties hit him a little better, but not well. With LAnaheim, opposition right-handed batters posted a .358 OBP against Fuentes. Given that it was 138 at bats, it could just be a lucky year for the righties. Brian will play 2010 as a 34 year old, however, so both his strikeout rate and his stats against RHB are worth watching.

I guess Fernando Rodney said today that he’s not trying to take Fuentes’ job from him. I hope Fuentes rebounds. The Angels bull pen could be pretty good, especially if Scot Shields comes back healthy.
