Kicking the Beckett

Patrick Sullivan examines the case for the Red Sox extending or not extending Josh Beckett. The gist of his article is that elite pitchers stay good as they age, and Beckett is an elite pitcher. My own guess is that the Red Sox would be happy to extend him three years, but Josh will want a longer term commitment. The Red Sox are not afraid to let players go, so I’m guessing the chance is about 60% that Josh becomes a free agent. The trick, for Boston, will be to make the departure as pleasant as possible so that if the market doesn’t develop for Josh, Boston can come back in an resign him.
