Craig Calcaterra relays this overheard conversation at the winter meetings:
“So Melvin tells Kendall’s agent — ‘I got $2 million to pay a catcher. You let me know if you want it or not.’ Kendall thinks he’s worth more than that and says no. Jesus, what the hell does that guy think he’s worth? He thinks he’s gettin’ a number one job someplace?”
Ivan Rodriguez just received $3 million a year to be a backup catcher. When I first heard that news, I wondered if the Nationals were just trying to drive up the price of catchers for everyone else, but quickly dismissed the thought. Now I’m not so sure. Kendall seems to think he’s worth more than $2 million, and I-Rod’s signing might force the Mets to spend more at the position as well.
