Gavin’s Gotten Gains

The Chicago White Sox took arbitration out of the future of Gavin Floyd:

Right-hander Gavin Floyd and the Chicago White Sox have agreed to a $15.5 million, four-year contract, a deal that includes a club option for 2013.

He will be a free agent after the 2012 season unless the White Sox pick up the option. Since joining the White Sox, Floyd cut down on his walks considerably. His first full season in the rotation yielded just 30 home runs after giving up 37 in his first 178 2/3 innings.

The White Sox, however, should be worried about the Verducci Effect. Floyd may be old enough that it doesn’t matter, but it’s a good thing the White Sox didn’t guarantee more than four years.

I still wonder about the Verducci effect. I know Will Carroll did some work showing its contribution to injuries.

Just curious about your thoughts on this. Is it more of a “theory” than an “effect” at this point?

I believe the probability of an injury goes up with the Verducci effect. It’s not a fact that every pitcher abused in this way will get injured.
