Best Batter Today

Friday brought some big changes to the top five of the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings. Juan Soto of the Mets posted a game score of 72, tied for the fifth highest on the evening in a 12-6 win over the Nationals. Soto went two for three with two walks and a home run, his 42nd. That’s a new single season high for him. Matt Olson of the Braves dropped to second place with a double in four trips to the plate in a 10-1 win over the Tigers. The Tigers are now just 2 1/2 games ahead of Cleveland. The Guardians beat the Twins 6-2 for their eighth straight win.

Yandy Diaz of the Rays and Vinnie Pasquantino of the Royals tied for the third highest game score of the day, a 76, as they move into third and fourth place respectively in the rankings. Diaz went three for four with a walk, a double, and a home run in an 11-7 Red Sox win. It was a close game until Boston scored seven runs in the top of the eighth inning, then allowed the Rays four runs in the bottom of the ninth. Diaz is hitting a very healthy .300/.365/.488 on the season.

Pasquantino went four for four with two doubles in a 20-1 thrashing of the Blue Jays. He hit in fourteen of his last fifteen games, with seven multi-hit games in the mix. Randal Grichuk, who replaced Pasquantino in the game, collected two hits, making the third slot in the order six for six.

Pasquantino’s teammate, Michael Massey, posted the highest game score of the day, an 83. He collected four hits and a walk in six plate appearances, including a home run in the seven run first inning. The big night, however, was only able to raise his OBP to .257 on the season.

In the same game, George Springer of the Blue Jays went two for three with a walk and a home run, and the home run came leading off the game. His game score of 69 tied him for ninth best on the day and moved him into fifth place in the rankings.
