The Astros avoid arbitration with the master of the combined no-hitter, Cristian Javier. They agree to a five-year, $64 million deal:

Javier won both his postseason starts, pitching 11? scoreless innings in Game 3 of the American League Championship Series against the Yankees and Game 4 of the World Series against Philadelphia.

He started a pair of no-hitters, pitching seven innings at the Yankees on June 25 and six innings in the game at the Phillies — just the second no-hitter in World Series history.

Javier tamed both his walk and home run rates last season. With a high strikeout rate, he allowed just 89 hits in 148 2/3 innings. I would not be surprised to see him post more six and seven inning no-hit outings. I wonder at what point do the Astros let him try to go the distance? It’s quite possible the way bullpens are set up today and someone like Javier could set a record for participating in a no-hitter.

The deal contains performance bonuses and is typically backloaded, paying him as if he were in arbitration over the next three seasons. The Astros get all of his prime at a very good price.
