Throwing Too Hard?

Maybe there is something to chasing velocity as a cause of injuries. The Dodgers placed Yoshinobu Yamamoto on the illjured list. He felt triceps tightness in the game in Friday, after throwing hard against the Yankees in his previous outing.

Yamamoto allowed only one hit Saturday night, but there was a noticeable dip in the velocity of the 28 pitches he threw. His four-seam fastball ranged from 92.9 mph and 95.9 mph with an average of 94.2 mph, down 1.3 mph from his season average of 95.5 mph entering the game.

Yamamoto threw 29 pitches that were clocked at 97 mph or higher in his previous start in which he blanked the New York Yankees on two hits over seven innings on June 7. The velocity of his secondary pitches were also down Saturday, his curve by 2.4 mph and his split-fingered fastball by 2.9 mph.

With luck, this injury won’t be serious, but I’ve become very pessimistic when I hear “tightness.”

Soto Inflamed

Some fairly good news for Juan Soto and the Yankees after he came out of Thursday’s game with a sore forearm:

Soto underwent testing Friday, which revealed the inflammation and no ligament damage in his elbow.

Boone said Soto was day-to-day. He was not in the lineup for Friday night’s series opener against the Los Angeles Dodgers in New York, but Boone said he could be available to pinch hit sometime this weekend.

ESPN.com

The timing is bad, as we only get to see six of the best hitters in the majors, rather than seven.

Putting Catchers at Risk

This post caught my eye last week:

So part of framing isn’t just pulling the ball into the strike zone, but catching it closer to the plate so the umpire doesn’t see as much of a drop. This immediately made me think of Willson Contreras’s injury.

Now, a minor league catcher is in the hospital after getting hit in the head with a backswing:

Henry was hit in the back of the head by the swing from Syracuse Mets third baseman Pablo Reyes in the seventh inning. He immediately went to the ground upon contact and athletic trainers tended to him.

Officials decided not to continue the game after the injury.

The Bisons said later in the night that Henry was “alert and appropriately responsive” at an area hospital. They called the injury a “scary incident.”

ESPN.com

Batters erase the back line of the batter’s box so they can stand as far behind the plate as possible to give themselves more time to recognize and hit very fasts pitches. Now catcher are creeping closer to the plate to try to get an edge in called strikes. The results at first were more catcher interference calls, and now major injuries.

This has to stop. I always thought pitch framing was a form of cheating, and now that cheating is causing physical harm.

I have a suggestion. Home plate umpires should start wearing small video cameras capable of recording footage that could be used in virtual reality headsets. Once a library is built up, the night before a game behind home plate, the umpire trains on the pitcher/catcher combination for the next game. He sees a pitch, calls a ball or strike, and the VR corrects him when needed. This way, the umpire learns how catchers fool try to fool him. He also learns what the pitcher throws, so he is better at recognizing from that point of view.

Being fooled by pitch framing is a pattern recognition problem. The problem can be trained away, and then catchers can go back to catching at a distance, and CI calls can once again be very rare.

Acuna Done

Ronald Acuna Jr.suffered a knee injury on Sunday that ended his season:

An MRI exam showed Acuña suffered a complete tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during the first inning of Sunday’s 8-1 win over the Pirates at PNC Park. The reigning National League MVP will have to undergo the same long, grueling rehab process that followed him tearing the ACL in his right knee midway through the 2021 season.

“I hate it for the young men that it affects more than us,” Braves manager Brian Snitker said when asked about the significant injuries some of his stars have suffered this year. “These guys love to play the game. When something like this happens, I hate it.”

MLB.com

The Braves fielded a deep enough team in 2021 to win the World Series even without Acuna. They are still deep, and at the moment hold the top wild card slot. Acuna had not played at his usual high level in 2024, which contributed to the Braves being six games behind the Phillies. This isn’t a death blow to the Braves, but it certainly makes a great season tougher. Acuna currently ranks 77th in the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings.

He’ll Always Have Paris

Xander Bogaerts broke his shoulder:

“I’m not a big timetable guy,” Padres manager Mike Shildt said. “Obviously he’ll be on the sidelines for a period of time. It’s really impossible to say how long. We’re still gathering information.”

Bogaerts injured his shoulder while diving for a ground ball in the first game of a doubleheader Monday against the Atlanta Braves. Bogaerts was escorted off the field after being evaluated by training staff.

Initial imaging of Bogaerts’ shoulder came back negative, but the fracture was revealed when further tests were done on Wednesday.

ESPN.com

There is no structural damage to the shoulder, but the bone needs time to heal. Bogaerts hopes to be back by late summer.

Bogaerts was off to a terrible start to the season, so bad that the Padres might benefit from his absence.

Unexpected Lee

The Giants lost their new centerfielder to a wall:

San Francisco Giants outfielder Jung Hoo Lee, who injured his left shoulder when he crashed into a wall in Sunday’s home game against the Cincinnati Reds, will undergo season-ending surgery in the next couple of weeks, the team announced Friday.

ESPN.com

San Francisco signed Lee to a six year deal out of South Korea. He did a great job getting on base in Korea. He posted a .310 OBP to start his MLB career. He had not drawn a walk in May, giving him a .270 BA/.270 OBP.

Trout Kneeds Surgery

Mike Trout won’t have a healthy season in 2024:

Angels superstar Mike Trout, hoping for a fully healthy season after being significantly limited by injury the past three years, needs knee surgery, general manager Perry Minasian said Tuesday.

Trout has a torn meniscus in his left knee, Minasian said.

The procedure, which is believed to be scheduled for Friday, isn’t considered to be season ending. At this point, it is not known how long Trout will be out.

ESPN.com

For the last few season the Angels needed a healthy Trout and a healthy Anthony Rendon. Once again, both are on the illjured list.

The Hurt Hurt

Eight and two thirds innings into his major league career, Kyle Hurt* of the Dodgers goes on the illjured list.

*No relation to Frank Thomas.

The Los Angeles Dodgers placed right-hander Kyle Hurt on the 15-day injured list Saturday because of right shoulder inflammation.

The move is retroactive to Wednesday. In a corresponding move, the Dodgers recalled left-hander Nick Ramirez from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Hurt, 25, made his first start in the major leagues on Tuesday, and in three games this season is 0-1 with a 1.35 ERA, one walk and three strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings.

I hope he’s not hurt too long, even though he’s Hurt for life.

Verlander on Injuries

Tom Tango produces a nice graph to support Justin Verlander‘s take on the causes of pitching injuries.

Changing speed used to be important, it was considered a way to keep batters off balance. It looks like people found that throwing hard with movement (from spin) is the best way to get batters out.

We keep finding out that the most efficient ways of winning are not the most entertaining nor the the safest.

Clock Injuries

Tony Clark, head of the MLBPA, blames the shortened time between pitches for the rash of elbow injuries:

“Since then, our concerns about the health impacts of reduced recovery time have only intensified,” Clark said. “The league’s unwillingness thus far to acknowledge or study the effects of these profound changes is an unprecedented threat to our game and its most valuable asset — the players.”

Cleveland’s Shane Bieber, Atlanta’s Spencer Strider, the New York Yankees’ Jonathan Loáisiga, Miami’s Eury Pérez and Oakland’s Trevor Gott are among the pitchers diagnosed with elbow injuries.

Major League Baseball pushed back on the union’s statement, pointing to a three-decade increase in pitcher injuries despite the clock being implemented just last season. MLB said that UCL surgeries at the minor league level actually declined in 2022, the first year that the pitch timer was used across the minors. The league believes the increase in max-effort pitching and focus on pitch design have contributed to the rise in injuries more than the clock.

“This statement ignores the empirical evidence and much more significant long-term trend, over multiple decades, of velocity and spin increases that are highly correlated with arm injuries,” MLB said in a responding statement Saturday.

ESPN.com

My idea of banning high speed pitches looks better all the time.

Note, too, that pitchers dislike the clock, and would even if there wasn’t a rise in injuries. Clark is on the hot seat with the union membership, so by pushing this issue, the politics work for him.

The Injury Story

Trevor Story of the Red Sox suffered a significant shoulder injury:

“It was kind of a freak thing, but I’m gonna miss a little time for sure,” Story said after Boston’s 2-1 loss to the Angels on Saturday night.

“Still trying to gather all the information and all the opinions from everybody involved. It’s a significant injury, and I think we’re kind of waiting to diagnose it before we get all the opinions.”

ESPN.com

Since signing with the Red Sox in 2022, Story played 145 of a possible 333 games. Even when he played, the injuries seem to have taken a toll as he produced a .227/.288/.394 slash line, power at a high cost of outs. His replacement, David Hamilton, produced a good OBP at AAA. In his seasonal age 26 season, he’s not a prospect, but even if he gets on base at a .310 clip he might be better than having Story eating up outs.

Another Elbow Blow

MLB loses another good pitcher to a bad elbow:

Braves ace right-hander Spencer Strider has damage to the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, an MRI revealed Saturday, leaving his status for the remainder of the season in doubt.

The Braves said Strider will be evaluated further by Dr. Keith Meister in Arlington, Texas, at a date to be determined. Even though the team did not announce the severity of the damage, Atlanta manager Brian Snitker said the result “wasn’t good.”

Chron.com

Strider throws a lot of sliders, nearly two-thirds of his pitches. When someone like him goes down, I’m reminded of this story about Zack Greinke:

Greinke, being Greinke, was perhaps just self-aware enough to change. He still throws plenty of sliders, but hopes to cap them at 15, maybe 20, per start, thereby balancing his desire to win with the hope to pitch again in five days. Perhaps the ulnar collateral ligament goes a thread at a time, he doesn’t really know, but if so, he was going to budget his threads, and not pitch straight through his elbow by the time he was 30 and then be no good to himself or his team for a year.

I suspect people studied this, and probably found no clear connection between sliders and elbow injuries. It still may be worth keeping the pitch in your pocket until you really need it.

Update: Jonathan Loaisiga of the Yankees needs elbow surgery as well.

Loaisiga said he will not have Tommy John surgery, which would have required 16 months for recovery. Instead, he will have a procedure that will sideline him for 10 to 12 months. He said Dr. Keith Meister will handle the surgery in Texas. Meister is known for performing an internal brace UCL surgery that trims recovery time.

ESPN.com

Loaisiga throw sliders at about half the rate as Strider.

Velocity and Injuries

This article about the ever increasing number of injuries to pitchers seems to blame the increased velocity of throws:

There is a big-picture issue here that teams and their sports scientists are attacking to try to better preserve pitching health. But no organization is willing to surrender an in-the-moment competitive advantage by attacking the main issue, or as Adam Ottavino said, “It [pitching injury] is a runaway train because of velocity.”

Yep, every year the average fastball ticks upward, but also now an acknowledgment that hitters have seen enough of it that they are adjusting to hit even high-end fastballs better. Thus, pitchers are spinning the ball with greater force and frequency.

And, as Hefner said, “More injuries are going to happen when you are doing an unnatural thing [throwing a ball with force overhand] and trying to do it as hard as you can and then trying to make each pitch as nasty as possible and then it is what the industry is paying for. This is how teams have won the World Series and we are a copycat league and everyone is trying to do the same thing. So the consequences are the injuries.”

NYPost.com

A couple of days ago I suggest banning high speed pitches and forcing hitters to swing heavier bats to cut down on strikeouts. If velocity is really the problem, then that ban would serve a two-fold purpose.

Wrist Watch

TJ Friedl, centerfielder of the Reds, broke his wrist on Saturday:

Friedl, 28, mostly batted first or second in the lineup last season, his third in the majors. He hit .279 with 18 home runs, 66 RBIs, 47 walks, and stole 27 bases in 33 attempts.

His absence could mean playing time in center field for the right-hand-hitting Stuart Fairchild and lefty-hitting Will Benson, according to Nick Krall, Cincinnati’s president of baseball operations.

ESPN.com

The Reds employ a rather balanced lineup, with the smallest spread between their best and worst lineups based on Musings Marcels projections. The Lineup Analysis tool bats Friedl seventh in the order, making him a bit more easy to replace offensively. Fairchild is projected to slash .239/.323/.414 in 2024, while Benson comes in at .263/.345/.443. Both are perfectly fine with the bat.

Cole’s Elbow

There is an unconfirmed report that Gerrit Cole does not need Tommy John surgery:

Cole has been advised to rest and undergo noninvasive treatment, and will be shut down for at least a month, a source said. The Yankees have not given a timetable for Cole’s return.

ESPN.com

A friend of mine suggested the Yankees sign Trevor Bauer. It makes sense if the Yankees are trying to avoid giving big money to a free agent. The Dodgers are paying Bauer’s salary, so the Yankees could get him cheap. If he pitches poorly, he can be released easily enough. If he pitches well, the Yankees have an even stronger rotation when and if Cole returns.

The Yankees have a history of bringing in or back players suspended for domestic abuse. The team was able to get Ardolis Chapman cheap when his personal life made him difficult to move, and they were able to bring back Domingo German. They can probably weather the bad press they would get bringing Bauer on the team, especially if he pitches well.

Bad News and Good News

Gerrit Cole of the Yankees will undergo imaging of his elbow due to poor recoveries after pitching:

Boone, speaking before a Grapefruit League game, said the reigning American League Cy Young Award winner has not been recovering as expected between spring outings.

“His recovery, before getting to his next start, has been more akin to what he feels during the season, when he’s making 100 pitches,” Boone told reporters. “When he’s at 45 [pitches] and building to 55, he usually doesn’t have the recovery issues he’s having.

“I think there’s a level of discomfort, but I wouldn’t describe it as he’s in pain.”

ESPN.com

At least he is not complaining about forearm tightness. Still, it is bad news for the Yankees if Cole is not 100%.

Of course, that might be very good news for Blake Snell and/or Jordan Montgomery. If Cole is seriously injured, those two might get a much better deal from a rich team like the Yankees.

Giolito Torn

Lucas Giolito, signed by the Red Sox to anchor the rotation, may miss all of 2024:

Giolito, who was expected to be the Red Sox’s Opening Day starter, has a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament and flexor strain that could require surgery that would likely keep him out for the entirety of 2024, according to sources.

Giolito, 29, was one of just three free agent signings by the Red Sox over the winter, alongside reliever Liam Hendriks — who is expected to miss most, if not all, of 2024 after undergoing Tommy John surgery — and right-hander Cooper Criswell. While Red Sox chairman Tom Werner had suggested at the outset of the winter that the team would take a “full throttle” approach to free agency, Giolito’s two-year, $38.5 million contract represented more than three-quarters of their $49.5 million outlay, which ranks 13th in Major League Baseball.

ESPN.com

The Red Sox need a pretty good plan B now that their ace will likely miss significant time. This injury puts more pressure on the offense to be outstanding.

Beck’s Aneurysm

Doctors diagnosed Giants pitcher Tristan Beck with an aneurysm in his pitching arm.

The team announced Beck’s situation Thursday after he had left spring training camp to be examined by a vascular specialist at Stanford.

Beck could miss significant time, with Opening Day possibly in jeopardy.

Family Comes First

Blue Jays pitcher Erik Swanson is away from the team after his son was struck by a car:

Blue Jays manager John Schneider made the announcement about the boy’s injury at the team’s complex in nearby Dunedin.

“Thanks to the incredible work from the Clearwater first responders, Toby is on the road to recovery and is surrounded by his family,” Schneider said.

Schneider said Swanson will be away from camp “for a while.”

Shot Across the Bow

A couple of Mets players wonder why Billy Eppler was singled out for using the Phantom Illjured List:

Tommy Hunter, who pitched for the Mets from 2021-23, which included two years under Eppler’s tenure, said his old boss did not do anything much different than other GMs he played for.

NYPost.com

MLB sent a message here. They know that GMs use the IL improperly, and I suspect that improper use grew over time to the point that the game needs to rein in the practice. The league picked a high profile target, the GM of a New York team, to send a message to the rest of the league.

I also suspect that Eppler received just one year because he talked. MLB probably obtained a much better picture of the mechanisms GM use to fake the injuries, so the league can be better prepared to spot these in the future.

A reminder that in any type of transaction, the optimum amount of fraud is not zero. Stopping fraud requires adding friction to transactions, and two much friction can bring the process to a halt, or at least make the process so costly as to be inefficient. It looks like MLB is trying to keep the friction low by issuing a serious warning.

Not Living With a Hernia

Corey Seager opted for surgery for a sports hernia that would not heal. GM Chris Young believes Seager will be ready for opening day:

Young said the hernia issue came up during the postseason, when Seager was getting some minor treatment in the training room, but it didn’t affect his play as the Rangers won their first World Series title.

Even after extended rest following the season, Seager felt effects of the hernia through offseason workouts. Young said Seager and the team opted for surgery.

Surgery for Scherzer

Max Scherzer underwent surgery to repair a herniated disc in his back and will be out of the Texas rotation until the summer of 2024:

He joins Jacob deGrom and newly acquired right-hander Tyler Mahle on the injured list to begin 2024. DeGrom and Mahle are recovering from Tommy John surgery; both could return mid-to-late summer — along with Scherzer.

ESPN.com

The Rangers could field an awesome rotation going into the playoffs if everyone heals well. With their offense, that kind of staff would give them an excellent chance to be the first team to repeat as World Champions this century.

Kershaw Under the Knife

Clayton Kershaw underwent shoulder surgery and will be sidelined until the summer of 2024:

The 35-year-old wrote in a social media post that the surgery with Dodgers head team physician Dr. Neal ElAttrache was to repair the glenohumeral ligaments and his shoulder capsule. There are three glenohumeral ligaments and they reinforce the joint capsule.

“I am hopeful to return to play at some point next summer,” Kershaw wrote. “Thanks for your prayers!”

Kershaw was sidelined for six weeks by the shoulder injury, and it hampered him during the final couple of months of the season. Neither he nor the team said much about his shoulder during the season.

ESPN.com

Kershaw is a free agent, but of course this type of surgery might put a damper on teams signing him right away. According to the article, the Dodgers want him back. We’ll see how this works out, but I would not expect a team other than the Dodgers to sign him early.

Texas Down Two

The Rangers lost Adolis Garcia and Max Scherzer to injuries:

Rangers All-Star right fielder Adolis Garcia, who has eight home runs and a record 22 RBI this postseason, was diagnosed with a strained oblique Tuesday while Max Scherzer was dealing with back tightness – and both were removed from the World Series roster ahead of Game 4.
