Filling Up the Wrong Side of the Defensive Spectrum

The Diamondbacks, Angels, and White Sox completed a deal that put first baseman Mark Trumbo in Arizona:

Outfielder Adam Eaton will go from Arizona to Chicago, and the Angels will get pitchers Hector Santiago and Tyler Skaggs. A source told the Associated Press that Arizona will also receiving a player to be named from each of the other clubs in the deal.

Trumbo hit a career-high 34 home runs last season for the Angels.

It seems to me the Diamondbacks don’t need Mark Trumbo, since they already own an excellent first baseman. Paul Goldschmidt played just one game away from first base in his professional career, so I don’t think Arizona will move him. My guess is the Diamondbacks hope to gain a decent prospect or two from the yet to be determined players.

Tyler Skaggs, given his minor league numbers, may turn out to be a pretty good pitcher. Adam Eaton has a chance to be a great lead-off hitter. If Trumbo is the best player the Diamondbacks get out of the deal, I don’t see the point of the trade.

Update: According to Nick Piecoro, Trumbo will play leftfield. I don’t think he’ll help the team defensively. Combine that with Mark being an out machine, and I really don’t like this move.
