Life, the Universe, and Jackie Robinson

I read this post about Schelling points, and as a baseball observer I’d pick 755 as a number (although earlier in my life I would have picked 714). Someone suggested nine for baseball, but three is the more important number. It’s the number of strikes for an out, the number of outs in an inning, the square root of the number of innings in a game, and the cube root of the number of outs a team records in a complete game, as well as the maximum number of runners on base at one time. The baseball place would differ by fans; most might pick the stadium of their home team, but a common place would probably be Cooperstown and the Hall of Fame.

The author of the posts asked for this type of answer in the comments:

What are the Schelling points for the people who share your hobby or profession? What numbers, places, or things could you count on a fellow practitioner to see as the “obvious” choices?

And the first comment is:

Well probably the most prevalent in the self styled nerd community would be 42.

And it took me a couple of second to get it, since right now 42 means Jackie Robinson to me. I have read all the Douglas Adams books that derive from the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, however, so I did jump to the right reference quickly.

So maybe the computer that brought fourth the answer to life, the universe, and everything really meant Jackie Robinson, but as computers are wont to do, used the fewest bits it could to express the answer. After all, Robinson showed people can overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles to succeed That’s as good a meaning of life as you’ll find out there.

Maybe some movie house can run a double feature of 42 and Hitchhiker’s Guide.
