NL West Race

It looked like it might be an easy start of the week for both the Giants and they Diamondbacks. San Francisco hosted Pittsburgh, a team that lost 10 in a row, and Arizona welcomed Houston, the team with the worst record in baseball. The underdogs turned the table Monday night, the Astros winning 9-1 while the Pirates shut out the Giants 5-0.

Astros rookie J.D. Martinez got the team started with a three-run homer in the first, and he would score two more times as the team pounded Daniel Hudson, chasing him after three innings. In nine games, Martinez hit two doubles and three home runs, driving in eleven and scoring six times. He’s doing a good job filling one of the holes left by Hunter Pence and Michael Bourn.

Charlie Morton pitched eight shutout innings and the Pirates offense banged out 12 hits, nine against starter Ryan Vogelsong to beat the Giants. Morton pitched seven shutout innings in his first August start, giving him a 0.00 ERA for the month. For one night, the push overs did the pushing.

Watching Extra Innings last night, I had to smile at at the first-inning commentary from Sutton and Grace. They sounded dumbfounded that the ASTROS were doing this stuff.

To be fair, I couldn’t believe what the Astros were doing, either.
