Jon Heyman reports that Paul Splittorff lost his battle with cancer:
Condolences to the family of paul splittorff, who lost his battle with melanoma. Very nice man said all. 2 young at 64.
I remember Paul pitching for Kansas City in the 1990s. He wasn’t feared, as he seldom struck out more than five batters per nine innings in a season. He had great control, however, and kept the ball in park. He was a decent pitcher on a good team, which gave him a winning career record with a 3.81 career ERA.
Interestingly, 1973 was his best season despite a 3.98 ERA. He went 20-11, and earned a 3.5 WAR, the highest of his career. The high ERA was a result of the American League switching to the designated hitter that season and runs going up.
My thoughts go out to his family and friends.
