One for Mariano

Mariano Rivera is willing to take a one-year deal from the Yankees.

When I asked if he would be amenable to doing what Andy Pettitte (another free-agent-to-be) does, and take one-year contracts and determine at the end of each season if he wants to continue to play, Rivera said, “Something like that would be fine.”

That would certainly make the life of the Yankees front office easier. It would also allow them to continue to pay Mariano well, without having to worry about him suddenly falling off and sticking them with a multi-year contract.

Hat tip, Hardball Talk.

That solves one problem, the big one will be Jeter.

I would offer him 10 million a year for 5-8 years, with performance incentives based on PA that could bring him 20 million per year in total. That way if he does what he hopes to do in breaking Roses record he will be paid fairly, if not, the Yankees loss is minimized. Not sure Jeter goes for it.

Personally I hope they give him 20 million for the next 10 years, since I am pretty sure that like A-Rod and Teixeira, and even CC, that this will hurt the Yankees in the long run.
