The Reds and Padres played a 16 inning game Saturday night, the longest of the year in terms of time and innings. Edinson Volquez and Josh Geer each lasted 5 2/3 innings, Volquez leaving with a 5-2 lead. The next three Reds relievers each allowed a run, while the Padres bullpen allowed just one more hit in regulation.
The Padres held the advantage in relievers going to extra innings.
Owings, the Reds’ fifth starter, was pitching out of the bullpen because the Reds are short handed since Nick Masset was not available due to a strained left oblique. The right-hander was told he would need to be ready in case of emergency for both Friday and Saturday’s games.
Owings pitched 5 2/3 innings before a Nick Hundley home run finished the game in the bottom of the 16th, the Padres winning 6-5.
San Diego’s bullpen pitched 10 1/3 scoreless innings in the game, allowing three hits, and five walks while striking out 8. The longest scoreless bullpen marathon I could find (1957 on) belonged to the Cardinals, 19 innings against the Mets on 9/11/1974. This was the 11th game of the aughties in which a bullpen pitched 10 or more scoreless innings.
