The win means they take two of three from the Red Sox and reduce the lead in the AL East to 9 1/2 games.
New York plays three games in Boston at the end of next week, then don’t see them again until the end of August. They really need to gain as much ground as they can in that series next week, because they just might run out of games late in the year if they don’t.
