Games of the Day

The Reds visit the Marlins with Graham Ashcraft facing rookie Eury Perez. Ashcraft cut down on both hit and home run rates, lowering his ERA over a run compared to 2022. Perez makes his major league debut, and he will be the youngest person to pitch for the fish. He stands six feet eight inches tall. He pitched at AAA for the first time this season, only seasonal age 20, and owned a 2.32 ERA with 42 K and just 9 BB.

The Cubs make their way to Minneapolis as Drew Smyly battles Sonny Gray. Overall, Smyly holds a 3.05 ERA on the season, but since a rough first outing posted a 1.87 ERA in six starts. Gray should be in the early season Cy Young discussion as he owns a 1.35 ERA in 40 innings. He has yet to allow a home run.

The Padres try to gain on the Dodgers as Blake Snell takes on Dustin May. Snell is off to a poor start, walking two batters more per nine innings and giving up one home run more per nine innings than he did in 2022. Due to the pandemic and injuries, May never pitched more than 56 innings in a season, but holds a 12-9 record and a 3.13 ERA. It looks like 2023 will be the year he gets to stretch himself out. So far, he stands 4-1 with a 2.68 ERA, giving up just one home run in 40 1/3 innings.
