Games of the Day

The second place Orioles get a chance to gain on the first place Rays as the teams meet in Baltimore. Shane McClanahan takes on Kyle Gibson. McClanahan leads one of the four Cy Young predictor stats, Bill James Cy Young points. Only one of the four home runs he allowed came in road games. Gibson owns a 4-1 record despite a 4.61 ERA. The Orioles scored at least five runs in his first six starts, getting shut out in his seventh appearance.

The Dodgers visit the Brewers with Tony Gonsolin facing Freddy Peralta. I find Gonsolin fascinating. He is a great pitcher who doesn’t pitch much. He turns 29 on Sunday, owns a 26-6 career record with a 2.53 ERA. He only passed 60 innings once, however, last season when he reached 130 1/3. On top of that, his three-true outcomes are good, but not great, suggesting his very low hit level has a lot to do with the Dodgers defense. His career FIP is a run higher than his ERA, and his xFIP stands at 4.14! His career .233 BABIP seems impossibly low.

Peralta pitched consistently solid since the start of the 2020 season. He is willing to walk batters to avoid hits and power.

Houston visits Anaheim with Hunter Brown battling Patrick Sandoval. Brown owns a 1.96 ERA in 55 MLB innings, and has yet to allow a home run. Sandoval owns a 2.91 ERA since the start of 2022, giving up just 10 home runs in 179 1/3 innings, 0.5 per nine innings.
