Landrith Passes

Catcher Hobie Landrith, the first pick of the Mets in the expansion draft, died Tuesday at the age of 93:

He started behind the plate in the Mets’ first game ever on April 11, 1962, an 11-4 loss to the Cardinals.

His signature moment with the Mets came one month later when he hit a two-run, walk-off home run off of Hall of Famer Warren Spahn, giving the Mets a 3-2 win over the Milwaukee Braves.

My thoughts go out to his family and friends.

Landrith best year came in 1959 with the Giants. He played 109 games that season with a .251/.345/.332 slash line. That was his career in a nutshell. He owned a good eye for the strike zone, walking more than he struck out, and with a .320 OBP, he didn’t give away outs at the plate. Although he opened with the Mets in 162, he wound up spending most of the season with the Orioles, and matched his single season high of five home run that year.
