Going Batty

Arizona Manager Torey Lovullo discusses how he uses Zack Greinke at the plate:

From the standpoint of Wins Above Replacement (WAR), Greinke as a hitter has been worth 4.2 wins in his career, per Baseball-Reference. In an interview earlier in spring training with The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, Greinke noted that his contributions as a hitter ought to work in his favor when he is considered by Hall of Fame voters.

He is so far ahead of the average pitcher that Lovullo doesn’t want to simply give away an out when he’s at the plate. Though Greinke had four sacrifice bunts last season, Lovullo said it’s often something Greinke suggests before going to the plate.

“It’s something he offers to me by saying, ‘I might be a little fatigued’ or, ‘This guy’s got good stuff,’” Lovullo said. “He’s just giving me some information. ‘I don’t want to run the bases because it’s late.’ Those are the times we’ll bunt.”

Here are Greinke’s career batting splits. He seems to do better the fewer men on base. I also like that Lovullo doesn’t like to bunt in general. He wants to conserve his outs.
