Aledmys Diaz hit two home runs Saturday afternoon to help the Cardinals to a 10-4 win over the Reds. Both home runs came off Bronson Arroyo, as Diaz spoils Arroyo’s return to the majors.
Diaz now has seven hits on the season, four of them for extra bases. Diaz finished 2016 with a .510 slugging percentage, with 48 of his 121 hits going for extra bases. With his performance today, he raised that a bit as well. At one time, this kind of power was unusual, but even otherwise poor hitters at the position, like Didi Gregorious, seem to be producing home runs today. Coming into today, MLB shortstops had a higher slugging percentage than MLB designated hitters.
