Papel Pow

It seems the big news of the afternoon was the fight between Bryce Harper and Jonathan Papelbon:

Somehow â?? and frankly, it seemed impossible â?? the disappointing chaos of this 2015 Nationals season escalated further Sunday afternoon after Jonathan Papelbon and Bryce Harper had to be separated in the Nationals dugout in the eighth inning of the Nationals 12-5 loss.

Harper popped out to short left field, put his head down, and jogged slowly to first. He did not run the ball out at full speed, and Papelbon appeared to take issue with it. As Harper walked back to the dugout, taking off his batting gloves, Papelbon appeared to mouth â??run that outâ? at the 22-year-old MVP candidate. Harper fired back, and the two exchanged words until Harper got back into the dugout, a step below Papelbon. From what was visible on television replays, Harper appeared to tell Papelbon something along the lines of â??bring it onâ? (in less polite terms). Then Papelbon reached for Harperâ??s throat, and the right fielder did the same. Ian Desmond â?? who would get a curtain call for his years of Nationals service a few minutes later â?? pulled Harper away as other teammates held Papelbon back.

According to this story:

About 2 1/2 hours before the start of his team’s first truly insignificant-in-the-standings game of 2015, Harper walked into the home clubhouse and began cleaning out his locker.

Harper threw away empty shoe boxes. The slugger rolled uniform pants and carefully folded T-shirts before placing them in a blue-and-red team duffel bag. He loaded other items into cardboard boxes.

The Nationals play their last home game on Monday, a meaningless makeup game with Cincinnati, so I don’t see if cleaning out a locker is a big deal. We’ll see what both players have to say.

Update: Papelbon and Matt Williams said it was a family matter and they everyone talked it out. Williams did add:

“It’s no fun when stuff like this happens, but it does happen, and you must deal with it, and that is what we do,” Williams said.

I think the key was Harpers public comments after the Machado incident. Not exactly standing up for his team mates there. Something was brewing between these two that had nothing to do with Harpers hustle or cleaning out his locker
