Sports Illustrated is reporting Dan Haren was trade to the Angles, but there are no details at the moment.
Update: The Arizona Republic says the Diamondbacks get Joe Saunders, Patrick Corbin and Rafael Rodriguez, plus a player to be named later. The Angels are certainly dumping pitching.
Update: Patrick Corbin is a 20-year-old, high strikeout, low walk pitcher who gives up a lot of hits. He’s just in his second year in professional ball, and he’s moved from rookie league to high A. I wonder how the defense has been behind him, since he’s given up a lot more hits than I’d expect for a pitcher who strikes out 8.3 per nine innings.
Rodriguez is a not very good reliever at the major league level. At the minor league level he wasn’t bad at the job. He cut his walks way down after he moved out of the starting rotation.
Unless the player to be named later is someone special, or Corbin turns out to be an ace in a few years, LAnaheim got a good deal. Haren’s strikeouts are still high and his walks are still low, and he’ll probably allow fewer home runs pitching in Anaheim. Joe Saunders has the great winning percentage, but he’s not a great pitcher. He’s a 4.00 ERA in the NL, which is fine if he’s playing behind a good offense. With Haren, the Angels should have another ace to go with Jered Weaver.
I do worry that they’ve emptied the farm system of pitching with the Royals and Diamondbacks trades.
Update: Joe Sheehan and I seem to be on the same page with this trade.
