More Mets Mess

The Mets hitters appear to be unhappy about the midnight firing of the hitting coaches late Monday night:

“I found out on Twitter while I was eating my postgame meal,” Alonso said, explaining he then talked to acting general manager Zack Scott and gave Davis and Slater hugs. “And then I cried at my locker a little bit.”

The slugging first baseman referred to the departed as “Uncle Chili and Uncle Slate, I mean, they’re like family to us.”

“It really caught us all off guard,” Alonso said. “It’s confusing for me, and, listen, I respect everybody who made that decision. But to me, it just doesn’t make sense right now.”

My own opinion is that the Mets did a good job of getting on base, and eventually that would have led to more runs. It seems this move was rash, but maybe it was designed to show that this is not the old, patient Mets ownership that accepts failure.

On top of that, the Mets needed to scratch Jacob deGrom from his Tuesday start:

An MRI revealed deGrom has inflammation in his right lat, the team said, and he will not throw for a few days. DeGrom is not going on the injured list. Jordan Yamamoto was called up and Sean Reid-Foley was optioned.

Maybe deGrom just wanted to wait a bit for the new hitting coaches to turn the offense around. He just needs two or three runs a game. Maybe the Mets will get that for him now.
