The Cleveland Indians erect a statue to Larry Doby:
Doby broke the color barrier in the AL on July 5, 1947, just months after Jackie Robinson debuted for the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 15. Doby spent nine seasons with Cleveland and helped lead the Indians to a World Series title in 1948. He had a career .283 average with 253 homers. He led the AL with 32 homers and 126 RBIs in 1954, when the Indians won 111 games.
He was a great player who doesn’t quite get the recognition he deserves. Nice to see the Indians giving him this posthumous honor.
Agree wholeheartedly with you, David.
There’s been an interesting thread at Bill James Online (paid subscription, totally worth it) about Doby’s underrated greatness.
Jack Spellman » I did see that.
