Low Ratings

Maury Brown notes the closing of Yankee Stadium wasn't a ratings bonanza. I'm not surprised. An NFL national broadcast is going to outdraw a baseball game anytime.

The game still got above average ratings for ESPN's Sunday night telecasts. Since both the Yankees and Orioles have long been out of contention, that's pretty good.

A more interesting note in Brown's blog concerns baseball's record revenues of $6.4 billion. Brown makes this into a "disappointment" story because baseball won't set an attendance record this year.

That's a pretty mild disappointment, considering those 6.4 billion reasons for encouragement. However, I do expect baseball to inject more offense into the game next year to boost the box office. Offense declined this year to some of the lowest levels since the early nineties.
