Day Dream Believer -- The Day by Day Database
A new improvement to the Day by Day Database. You can now compare players across time periods. For example, here's how everyone stacks up vs. Sammy Sosa during June of 1998. You can come up with any combination of dates, home-road, vs. team, on team and park. And you can sort by any numeric field. If you find any bugs, please let me know in the comments.
I'm going to make this post the entry point for the Day by Day Database. (would people prefer Day by Daytabase?)
Daily batting logs for individual players.
Compare players over a given time period.
I hope you find this a useful research tool.
Update: Pitcher day by day logs are now available as well.
Update: Pitcher comparisons are now available. See who has the best ERA or allowed the most HR over a period of time.
Update: Current hit streaks can be found here.
Update: Team starting pitcher log. This allows you to look at the starters for a team over a given period. See who is pitching when, against what teams, and get an overall record for the starters over the selected dates.
Update 12/7/2005: Batter Splits and Pitcher Splits are the new addition to the Day by Day Database. See the explanation here.
Update 12/10/2005: Team splits are now available. Pick team batters or pitchers, then set your parameters and see the results!
Update 12/19/2005: Added new split functionalities, Batter Splits by Season and Pitcher Split by Season. See the explanation here.
Update 3/19/2006: Added Batter Split Comparisons and Pitcher Split Comparisons. You can see examples of these in this post.
Update 6/2/2006: Added an RBI Percentage Chart to the database. See this post for an explanation.
Update 1/21/2007: Added Team Record with Players in Game. The explanation is here.
Update 7/19/2007: Added League Splits. This is great for finding out league averages over a given time period and for particular splits.
Baseball Musings is holding a pledge drive during March. Click here for details.

Heh... Barry Bonds and Jim Edmonds had as many home runs over that period as such luminaries as Neifi Perez, Glenallen Hill, Chris Widger, and (drumroll) Darryl Strawberry.
Dear dave:
fantastic. not only a wealth of statistical detail, but it enables those of us with age and fading memory to go back and check specific dates and games to refresh our recollection of great games and performances by players, such as the Schmidt 4HR game vs. the Cubs, or the Gary Matthews playoff HRs v. the Dodgers in 1983, or the Terry Mulholland and Tommy Greene no-hitters I watched at the Vet in the early 90s.
A unique tool to help reconstruct one's youth and one's memories as well as analyze ballplayer performance.
Thank you very much for posting it to the web. I plan to visit it when I have the time. While I'm not quite ready to do my memoirs yet, one thing I do plan to write about when I get the chance is my love of baseball over the course of my life, and this is a valuable tool for refreshing me as to dates and times of specific events, games and performances.
Thank you so much.
What a very valuable set of data.

Very useful.. thanks for making this available!
Hi, are there any records of the velocities of a given players fastballs on a given night. I'm doing a stats project and I need to compary the velocity of for example Randy Johnson starting form his rookie year to the present. Does anyone know where I could get a hold of this information?
Is there any way I can get the average of the number of innings pitched per start for all American League starters and National League starters in 2004? I say the National League starters pitched less innings and a friend believes the American league starters pitched less innings. Thanks.
Maybe it's just my computer, but I'm having trouble with pitcher comparisons sorting by hit batters. Otherwise, this is incredibly useful. Thanks.

Thanks, I had a bug. It's fixed now.
what is the highest average below 1.000 that any player has ever had at any time in a major league season. in other words, has a a guy ever gone 5 for 5 opening day, then 4 for 5, for a .900 avaerage, or was 6 fotr 7 the best ever, or what ?
It could be that the answer is the avaerage of the guy with the most consecutive hits to open the season after his first out, but not necessarily.
Where can I find current Team LOB stats? I can't find them anywhere--
I'm looking for the Pitching stat NP, including ALDS,
ALCS, World Series, All Star (separately) for years
prior to 1999. I can get this from MLB for 1999 and after,
but they don't give NP for post season appearances
prior to 1999. I really just need 1997 and 1998.
I have a question/request: is there a way to add splits for the pitching stats for starters and relievers? The difference between starting pitchers and relief pitchers, and a pitcher's stats as a starter versus his stats as a reliever (see Eckersley, Smoltz) that I think this would be quite useful!
Also, something I forgot to ask about: what about Holds and Blown Saves for relievers?
wow, what an amazing site
I just had a crazy idea for a request: is it possible to have another page for pitching stats in addition to the the current pitching and hitting stats pages, but with the offensive numbers against? That is, display the same categories as are displayed on the offensive page, but against each pitcher.
Beggars can't be choosers. This blog is fantastic and the Day-By-Day Database is incredible as it is. Thanks for making it available to us!
Okay, I'm finished suggesting my ideas. Thanks again. :)
Our league is going to use holds as a category next year. Where is a good website to find leaders in holds?
Thanks
ESPN keeps up with holds on its sortable stats page. Several other major sites' stat pages do too.
How could I find out the percentage of innings of 3 runs or more that contained a walk, hit by pitch, or error?
if a team scores 3 or more runs in an inning what is their percentage of wins?
This is really great. What I would like to see is a day by day breakout of everyone on a certain team for a certain time period, say, a year max. So, for instance, if I chose Chicago Cubs for the period 4/3/06 through 5/8/06, it would show me a by-player by-game breakout for the season to date for every player who appeared in at least one game for the Cubs.
sweet stuff; among myriad numbers in today's fantasy game, so many are largely overrated, but your content is full of good material; thanks
David,
Adding an "OPS" column, so that we can sort on that, would be useful.
Great job overall!
Tom
My husband loves baseball! He claims to know alot about the game except how "they" figure the averages. Please, can you tell me how this is done? Thank you sooo much.
