Hiring the Trainer

According to MetsBlog.com, the Mets hired Pedro Martinez's trainer to keep the two close for the rest of the season. I hope they vetted him thoroughly. This sort of thing led to trouble in the past (see Barry Bonds).

It is Sept 10th and it is Pedro. Unlike Bonds, he has been a model teammate. With weeks to go in the season I don't think the potential negatives have time to build.

Bulking up doesn't help a pitcher. Any pitching coach can tell you that. The few pitchers who have used steroids (like Guillermo Mota) can only be called stupid as well as shady.

"The few pitchers" have amounted to just over 60 percent of players disciplined by MLB. To me, that suggests the problem is NOT limited to any position (since pitchers usually amount to about the same percentage of each team's roster, if you include the guys on the DL). Some have suggested that pitchers actually benefit more from steriods than hitters--not due to "bulking up" but because they help reduce the recovery time between outings, which is particularly useful for relievers.

Steroids don't just "bulk up" athletes. They can increase strength, but they also can help shorten recovery times, adding to their ability to throw deeper into games, adding a bit to a fastball, etc.
