Dead Man Scoring

There's a great story at Mike's Baseball Rants about how a dead man can score a run.

Now I need to know how the "out for passing a runner" rule reads? This guy hit an inside the park HR and carried the lead runner from third to home in front of himself in time? How far did that ball roll, or how bad was the throw? Or is it okay as long as some part of him remains in front, like a fireman's carry?
